# Mosquito Imagery Sources Mixed-license imagery in this directory: 4 species + 1 lifecycle image come from CDC PHIL (public domain). 3 species come from Wikimedia Commons (CC-BY-SA 4.0, CC-BY 2.0, and CC0). 1 lifestyle photo comes from Unsplash. Attribution is documented even where the license does not require it. ## Files | File | Source | Subject | Author / Photographer | License | URL | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | `aedes-aegypti.webp` | CDC PHIL #26041 | Resting female *Aedes aegypti* | CDC | Public domain (17 USC §105) | | | `aedes-aegypti-larva.webp` | CDC PHIL #26030 | *Aedes aegypti* larva at the surface of standing water | CDC | Public domain | | | `aedes-albopictus.webp` | CDC PHIL #4487 | Female *Aedes albopictus* (Asian tiger mosquito) feeding | CDC / James D. No attribution required. - **Wikimedia CC-BY-SA 4.0** (`culex-pipiens.webp`): requires attribution to the author and a link to the license. Derivative works (including resized/recompressed versions) must carry the same CC-BY-SA 4.0 license. The on-site attribution lives in this file. License: . - **Wikimedia CC-BY 2.0** (`aedes-vexans.webp`): requires attribution. License: . - **Wikimedia CC0** (`anopheles-quadrimaculatus.webp`): public-domain dedication; no attribution required, but the original CDC employee credit (Edward McCellan / USCDCP) is preserved here. - **Unsplash License**: free for personal and commercial use. No attribution required, but the photographer credit is preserved here. License: . ## On-site attribution Per CC-BY-SA 4.0 §3(a)(1) and CC-BY 2.0 §4(b), the on-site visible page (e.g. `/mosquito` or any state forecast page) must carry attribution to the licensed images either inline near the image or via a link to this file. The current implementation surfaces attribution via the "Image Credits" link in the site Footer (Phase 2 Task 2.8). The link points to `/images/mosquitoes/SOURCES.txt` (not `.md`) because Amplify's default SPA rewrite catches `.md` extensions and returns the SPA shell instead of the file content. ## Provenance Originals downloaded on 2026-04-29 (CDC PHIL) and 2026-05-01 (Wikimedia + Unsplash). Originals are kept locally in `source/` (gitignored) and not committed to version control. Only the WebP outputs ship. ## Optimization WebP conversion via [`client/scripts/convert-images-to-webp.js`](../../../scripts/convert-images-to-webp.js): - Quality: 85 - Max width: 800px (downscale-only; smaller images are kept at native size) ## Re-running the conversion ```bash cd client node scripts/convert-images-to-webp.js \ public/images/mosquitoes/source \ public/images/mosquitoes \ --map=26041_lores.jpg:aedes-aegypti.webp,26030_lores.jpg:aedes-aegypti-larva.webp,4487_lores.jpg:aedes-albopictus.webp,17697_lores.jpg:culex-quinquefasciatus.webp,wikimedia_culex_pipiens_03.jpg:culex-pipiens.webp,wikimedia_aedes_vexans.jpg:aedes-vexans.webp,wikimedia_anopheles_quadrimaculatus.jpg:anopheles-quadrimaculatus.webp,unsplash_dog_outdoor.jpg:dog-outdoor.webp ``` ## Replacing with higher-quality imagery later If commercial or commissioned imagery replaces these files, keep the same WebP filenames so component code does not need to change. Update this `SOURCES.txt` to reflect the new licensing posture.
