First Snow: When Winter's Opening Flake Lands, State by State

Between late September and late January the first measurable snow crosses almost the whole country, Fairbanks to Atlanta. These are the median dates from three decades of NOAA daily records, tracked against today, with the early and late tails and the all time records.

Median first snow dates, earliest to latest

Dates are the median first measurable snow (0.1 inch or more) at each state's primary reference city over 1991-2020. States whose reference stations see snow in fewer than half of winters carry no median; their pages document the actual record events instead.

How the season opens

Four months of first snows

First snow is not one national event but a slow front. It starts where elevation does the work: the Colorado and Wyoming high country and interior Alaska can record measurable snow before the equinox. Late October belongs to the northern Plains, the lake-effect belts wake in early November, and by Thanksgiving most of the northern tier has been whitened at least once.

South of the Ohio River the calendar loosens: Nashville's median is near New Year's, Atlanta manages measurable snow in about two of three winters, and on the Gulf Coast a real snow is a generational story. The January 2025 storm that put 8 inches on New Orleans broke records that had stood since 1895.

Wherever you are, the pattern repeats at your own scale: flakes first, a dusting a week or three later, the first plowable inch after that. Each state page breaks out all three dates.

More of the cold season

The date question answered here pairs with the outlook question: our winter forecast pages read NOAA's seasonal outlook for every state, with snowfall normals and live snow depth. Gardeners should work from the first frost dates, which land weeks before the snow does, and skiers can jump straight to ski season timing or the live snow depth map.

Medians, windows, and records are our derivation from NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily station observations (method on every state page); NOAA publishes no official first-snow date normals. Measurable snow = 0.1 inch or more in a day.
