National Park Road Opening Dates
When the seasonal roads, gates, campgrounds and visitor centres normally open and close in every national park that closes part of itself for winter, with the years of actual opening dates the parks publish and a link to the page that has today.
32 of the 87 seasons here open when a plow crew gets through, not on a dateLead with the answer
Most alpine park roads open between the middle of May and the end of June, and none of them opens on a date.
The gate goes up when a plow crew finishes, and the crew finishes when the snowpack lets them. Across the 4 published records the parks keep, the middle opening date for Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass is 11 June, for Yosemite's Tioga Road it is 23 May, and for the Lassen park highway it is 2 June. The spread between the earliest and latest year is 60 days at Logan Pass and 105 days on Tioga Road. Book against the middle date and you are on the wrong side of it half the time.
What opens when, across the whole country
Every headline road, entrance and facility in this vertical, on one calendar year, ordered by when it normally opens. Denali plows to mile 13 in February so people can drive out for the light; Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park does not take a car until the first week of July. Both are in the same country and the same national park system.
- Opens on plowing progress
- Park published dates
- Fixed by rule each year
- Open year round, storm closures
Bars are the normal season each park describes on its own page, not a status and not a forecast. A bar starts where the park's own words put it, and the colour says what governs the date rather than what the road is doing. Read on 3 September 2026; every row's source and the park's own last-updated stamp are in the table further down.
A plow crew, not a calendar
An alpine park road is not closed in the way a shop is closed. It is buried. Glacier says clearing its roads takes two and a half to three months; Lassen clears up to forty feet of snow off thirty miles of highway; Yosemite starts on Tioga Road around 15 April and finishes between one and two months later, whenever that turns out to be.
Lassen Volcanic National Park, Spring Snow Clearing“Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park is known as the official park highway. This 30-mile stretch traverses avalanche-prone slopes with up to 2,000 foot drops and can hold a snowpack up to 40 feet deep.”
National Park Service, public domain. That page carries the park’s own stamp: last updated May 24, 2026.
Between the plow and the gate there is a second job nobody thinks about. The snow above the road has to be made safe first. Yosemite sends an avalanche team ahead of its plows and spreads charcoal at Olmsted Point to melt the slope faster; Glacier surveys the Big Drift at Logan Pass on foot, roped up, before a machine goes near it.

Yosemite National Park, Tioga and Glacier Point Roads Plowing and Road Opening Update“Each spring, plowing crews set out to clear 45.5 miles along the Tioga Road. Crews must safely navigate through multiple avalanche zones. In addition to several feet of snow, downed trees and rockfall often need to be cleared from the road.”
National Park Service, public domain. That page carries the park’s own stamp: last updated May 13, 2026.
Which is why the parks themselves refuse to predict. Yosemite puts it as plainly as anyone could ask for:
Yosemite National Park, Historical Seasonal Opening and Closing Dates“Clearing of the Tioga Road begins on or about April 15 each year and usually takes between one and two months. Predicting when these roads will open is not possible, even in late spring, because weather in April and May can affect plowing progress significantly.”
National Park Service, public domain. That page carries the park’s own stamp: last updated January 16, 2026.
The pattern across every park in this vertical is the same. Where a road crosses a high pass, the park describes a window and refuses a date. Where a road is closed by rule rather than by snow, the park gives exact dates and keeps them: Acadia shuts the Park Loop Road from 1 December to 14 April every year, and Grand Teton shuts the Teton Park Road from 1 November to 30 April, partly to leave a corridor for wildlife rather than because the plows cannot cope. Those two kinds of closure look identical on a map and behave nothing alike, so this vertical labels every row with which one it is.
Summarised from the National Park Service road and conditions pages for all 24 parks covered here in our own words.

Three parks keep the receipts
Most parks describe a normal season and leave it there. Three publish the actual date, year by year, for decades, which turns an unanswerable question into a measurable one. Glacier keeps Logan Pass back to 1933, the longest such record in the system. Yosemite ships Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road as a downloadable spreadsheet with the 1 April snowpack beside each year. Lassen publishes its highway back to 1980 with the snow depth measured at Lake Helen.
Logan Pass on Going-to-the-Sun Road: every opening since 1933
1933 to 2022, 90 seasonsNinety published seasons at Logan Pass, and the middle one opens 11 June. The earliest was 16 May in 1987 and the latest 15 July in 1933, the year the road was dedicated. In the modern record the late years cluster hard: 13 July in 2011, 2020 and 2022, all three for different reasons, and the park footnotes each one. The park’s own footnotes are worth reading as a list of everything that can go wrong. Avalanche damage. A rockslide two days after opening. A government shutdown. A pandemic. A fire on the west side. An exceptional snowpack and winter weather through June, twice.
Tioga Road across Yosemite: every opening since 1957, shaded by the 1 April snowpack
1957 to 2025, 68 seasonsYosemite is the one place you can see the mechanism directly, because it publishes the snowpack next to the date. In 2015 the Tuolumne drainage was at 7 percent of average on 1 April and Tioga Road opened on 4 May. In 2023 it was at 244 percent and the road opened on 22 July. That is eleven weeks of difference in the same road, decided by a number measured in April.

The Lassen park highway: every opening since 1980, shaded by the 1 April snow depth
1980 to 2026, 47 seasonsLassen Volcanic National Park, Spring Snow Clearing“The park does not have an established date for the full opening of the park road.”
National Park Service, public domain. That page carries the park’s own stamp: last updated May 24, 2026.
Every road and facility, with the park’s own date stamp
The last column is the part that matters most and that nobody else shows you: the date the park itself last touched the page the season came from. Some of those stamps are two or three years old. That is not a fault in the record, it is the record: a park that has not revised its description of a normal season since 2022 is telling you the season has not changed, and a page revised last week is telling you something did.

The 16 states with a park season
Three different things govern an opening date, and which one applies changes what you should do about it. 7 states (Montana, Colorado, California, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Nevada) turn on plowing progress, so watch the snowpack and hold the booking. 8 states (Wyoming, Arizona, Alaska, Maine, New Mexico, Michigan, Tennessee, North Carolina) run on dates the park publishes in advance, so the calendar is real enough to plan against. One state (Virginia) has no seasonal closure at all, and the thing to watch there is an alert feed rather than a date.

The other 34 states
A state is in this vertical when a National Park Service unit inside it publishes a seasonal opening or closing, in its own words, on its own page. That is a stricter test than “has a park that gets snow”, and it is deliberately stricter than “has a road that closes”. Idaho is the case worth reading. Craters of the Moon genuinely closes its loop road for winter, and the park’s own page for that road currently reads that it is being worked on and to check back later. There is nothing to cite, so Idaho is out with that as the reason rather than in with a date we made up.
- Alabama. Little River Canyon National Preserve, Russell Cave National Monument and Horseshoe Bend all run year round, and none of them publishes a seasonal road, campground or visitor centre closure.
- Arkansas. Hot Springs National Park and Buffalo National River operate all year. The Buffalo access points and low water crossings shut for flooding rather than on a published seasonal date.
- Connecticut. Weir Farm National Historical Park is the state’s only National Park Service unit and its grounds and trails are open year round, with only the historic buildings on a seasonal schedule.
- Delaware. First State National Historical Park runs year round across its sites at Beaver Valley, Brandywine, the New Castle Court House and Fort Christina, none of which closes for a season.
- Florida. Everglades National Park, Biscayne and Dry Tortugas run all year. The Everglades wet and dry seasons change what is passable, but the park publishes no seasonal opening or closing dates for any road.
- Georgia. Cumberland Island National Seashore and Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area run year round. The Cumberland Island ferry timetable and the Chattahoochee water levels move, but neither is a published seasonal closure.
- Hawaii. Haleakala National Park and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are open 24 hours a day all year. Their closures follow eruptions and are unscheduled, which is a different subject from a season.
- Idaho. Craters of the Moon genuinely closes its loop road for winter, and NPS’s own page for that road currently reads that it is being worked on and to check back later. There is no citable date, so Idaho stays out rather than carrying a number we invented.
- Illinois. Lincoln Home National Historic Site and Pullman National Historical Park are year round urban units, and the Lewis and Clark and Trail of Tears trails are routes rather than gated roads.
- Indiana. Indiana Dunes, Lincoln Boyhood and George Rogers Clark all run year round; the Dunes beach access changes with Lake Michigan conditions rather than with a published season.
- Iowa. Effigy Mounds National Monument and Herbert Hoover National Historic Site are open year round, and neither publishes a seasonal road, campground or visitor centre closure.
- Kansas. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Fort Scott National Historic Site and Nicodemus all run year round, closing for storms rather than on any published seasonal date.
- Kentucky. Mammoth Cave and Cumberland Gap keep their surface roads open all year. The Mammoth Cave tour schedule does change by season, but a tour calendar is not a road opening.
- Louisiana. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park both run year round, and Poverty Point closes for weather rather than for a season.
- Maryland. Assateague Island National Seashore, Antietam and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal all run year round. The Assateague over sand vehicle route changes with storms rather than with a season.
- Massachusetts. Cape Cod National Seashore staffs its beaches seasonally and Minute Man and Lowell run year round, but no unit in the state publishes a seasonal road, campground or visitor centre closure.
- Minnesota. Voyageurs is genuinely seasonal, since Rainy Lake and Kabetogama freeze and the ice roads across them come and go, but the park publishes ice conditions rather than opening dates, and Pipestone and Grand Portage run year round.
- Mississippi. The Natchez Trace Parkway and Gulf Islands National Seashore run year round, and Vicksburg National Military Park closes for storms rather than on a published seasonal date.
- Missouri. Ozark National Scenic Riverways and Gateway Arch National Park run year round. The Ozark access points close on Current River and Jacks Fork levels rather than on a published season.
- Nebraska. Scotts Bluff National Monument and Homestead National Historical Park are open year round. The Scotts Bluff Summit Road closes for ice and wind rather than on any published seasonal date.
- New Hampshire. The grounds and trails at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, the state’s only National Park Service unit, are open year round during daylight hours. Only its buildings are seasonal, and the park publishes those as hours rather than dates.
- New Jersey. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and Sandy Hook run year round. Old Mine Road and the Sandy Hook beaches close for flood and for staffing rather than on a published season.
- New York. Fire Island National Seashore, the Gateway units at Jamaica Bay and Staten Island, and the Hudson Valley sites all run year round. Their seasonal changes are lifeguard and ferry timetables rather than gates.
- North Dakota. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is open 24 hours a day year round in both its North Unit and its South Unit, and Knife River Indian Villages runs year round too. Both close for weather rather than for a season.
- Ohio. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Hopewell Culture and Perry’s Victory all run year round. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad has a season, but that is a concession timetable rather than a park road.
- Oklahoma. Chickasaw National Recreation Area and the Washita Battlefield both run year round, and the Lake of the Arbuckles swimming areas are staffed seasonally rather than gated.
- Pennsylvania. Gettysburg National Military Park, Valley Forge and Independence National Historical Park all run year round, and none of them publishes a seasonal road or facility closure.
- Rhode Island. Roger Williams National Memorial and Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park both run year round, and Touro Synagogue is on a tour timetable rather than a seasonal closure.
- South Carolina. Congaree National Park and Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie run year round. The Congaree boardwalk closes when the Congaree River floods it rather than on any published seasonal date.
- South Dakota. Badlands National Park, Wind Cave and Mount Rushmore are open year round. The Sage Creek Rim Road is gravel and closes for mud and snow, but Badlands publishes no seasonal dates for it.
- Texas. Big Bend National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park run year round. The River Road and the Guadalupe trails close for flood, fire and wind rather than on a published seasonal date.
- Vermont. The grounds at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, the state’s only National Park Service unit, are open year round. Only its guided tour programme, which runs May to October, is seasonal.
- West Virginia. New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park run year round, and the Gauley River access points close on water releases rather than on a season.
- Wisconsin. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore runs year round. Access to the mainland sea caves depends on Lake Superior ice, which the park publishes as a hazard advisory rather than as a season.
The four road pages people actually search for
Each of these is the park’s own page, and each of them is the only thing on the internet that knows what its road is doing this afternoon. The other 20 parks in this vertical have the same block on their state page.
