North Carolina Park Road Opening Dates
North Carolina is one of the states where the parks publish their dates in advance, so there is something real to plan against. Below: the normal season for every road, entrance, campground and visitor centre the parks here publish one for, drawn on a single calendar; the years of actual opening dates where a park keeps that record; and the link to the page where the park posts today. Every date carries the park's own last-updated stamp, read on 3 September 2026.
Kuwohi Road, formerly Clingmans Dome Road normally opens early April, and the park will not put a date on it any tighter than thatNorth Carolina, in one paragraph
Kuwohi Road, formerly Clingmans Dome Road normally opens early April.
1 April to 29 November in the 2026 schedule, and subject to closure for snow and ice inside that. North Carolina holds the highest road in the park and two that are still not scheduled. Kuwohi Road runs 1 April to 29 November, Heintooga Ridge Road runs mid May to the end of October, and Straight Fork and Heintooga Round Bottom are both listed as undecided, Straight Fork explicitly because of Hurricane Helene.
That season is Great Smoky Mountains National Park's own description, from a page the park stamps last updated April 20, 2026.

Every road, entrance, campground and visitor centre in North Carolina with a published season, ordered by when it normally opens. Bars are the park's own description, not a status and not a forecast. The colour says what governs the date.
These are the dates Great Smoky Mountains published for the 2026 season, read on 3 September 2026. The park says of them: “Roads typically open at 8:00 a.m. on the first day. All dates are subject to change depending on weather conditions.”

5 North Carolina park seasons, and where each one comes from
The last column is the one nobody else shows you: the date the park itself last touched the page each season came from. Read a two-year-old stamp as the park saying nothing has changed, and a stamp from last month as the park saying something has.
