Virginia Park Road Opening Dates
Virginia has no seasonal park road closure at all, which sounds simpler than it is. Below: the normal season for every road, entrance, campground and visitor centre the parks here publish one for, drawn on a single calendar; the years of actual opening dates where a park keeps that record; and the link to the page where the park posts today. Every date carries the park's own last-updated stamp, read on 3 September 2026.
Skyline Drive has no seasonal closure in Virginia, which means it can shut for weather at an hour's notice insteadVirginia, in one paragraph
Skyline Drive stays open all year, and that is the problem rather than the answer.
A road with no seasonal closure is a road that can be shut without notice, and there is no date on a calendar that tells you whether today is one of those days. Virginia has the opposite problem to the mountain west. Skyline Drive has no winter closure at all, which means it can be shut in sections at an hour’s notice for ice or fog and reopened the same afternoon, so the useful thing here is not a date but the park’s alert feed and the March to late November window its lodges and campgrounds run on.
That season is Shenandoah National Park's own description, from a page the park stamps last updated May 18, 2026.
Everything seasonal in Virginia, on one calendar
- Opens on plowing progress
- Park published dates
- Fixed by rule each year
- Open year round, storm closures
Every road, entrance, campground and visitor centre in Virginia with a published season, ordered by when it normally opens. Bars are the park's own description, not a status and not a forecast. The colour says what governs the date.
Shenandoah National Park, Operating Hours and Seasons“Shenandoah National Park is always open, however, portions of Skyline Drive, the only public road through the Park, are periodically closed during inclement weather.”
National Park Service, public domain. That page carries the park’s own stamp: last updated May 18, 2026.
Shenandoah National Park
- Lodges, campgrounds and waysides. Normally from mid March
- Skyline Drive. Year round

2 Virginia park seasons, and where each one comes from
The last column is the one nobody else shows you: the date the park itself last touched the page each season came from. Read a two-year-old stamp as the park saying nothing has changed, and a stamp from last month as the park saying something has.
| Road or facility | Park | Normal season | What sets the date | Park last updated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lodges, campgrounds and waysides | Shenandoah | most facilities begin opening in March and close by late November | Fixed by rule | May 18, 2026 |
| Skyline Drive3,680 ft | Shenandoah | open all year in principle, closed in sections whenever ice or fog makes it unsafe, sometimes for days | Storm closures | May 18, 2026 |
Shenandoah publishes its own status
Nothing on this site knows what a road is doing this afternoon, and nothing on this site pretends to. Each block below is the park’s own page, with what it carries and the caveats that go with it.

Every season and quotation on this page comes from a National Park Service page on www.nps.gov, read at build time on 3 September 2026 and shown with the park’s own last updated stamp rather than ours. NPS material is a work of the United States government and is in the public domain. Virginia is the only state in this vertical where there is no seasonal closure to publish. In Glacier National Park’s words about its own status map: “This report contains the most recent information available for road, hiker/biker, and entrance closures as well as snowplow status. It may be outdated and inaccurate as our information can change quickly.” National picture: park road opening dates in every state
