Vermont small game seasons, 2026-27

“When does small game season open” is five questions wearing one coat. Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department dates ruffed grouse (partridge), gray squirrel, and hare and rabbit dated together; no pheasant or quail season separately, so each species is below under the agency’s own name for it, with the zone rows exactly as the agency lists them.

Pheasant

no season

Vermont has no open pheasant season for 2026-27. Neither the department's Hunting and Trapping Seasons table, its 2026 seasons summary PDF nor the Small Game chapter of its digest lists a pheasant season; the table's upland bird rows are ruffed grouse and woodcock only. Opening day, the daily limit and the full season calendar are on the Vermont pheasant season page.

Quail

no season

Vermont has no open quail season for 2026-27. The department's season tables and Small Game digest chapter carry no quail row of any kind; bobwhite quail are not among the small game species Vermont dates. Source: Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.

Vermont dates snowshoe hare and cottontail rabbit together in one Hare & Rabbit season that opens the last Saturday of September; it closes the second Sunday of March in most of the state and stays open to March 31 in WMUs D and E. Because the two are dated together there is no separate hare entry.

Gray Squirrel

published

Gray Squirrel runs September 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026 across all zones.

Other Vermont small game seasons the agency names

Beyond the five main species, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department dates one further season on the same small game pages. They are reproduced here under the agency’s own names, because a hunter reading a calendar needs to know which window a licence or stamp actually covers.

Woodcock

published

Woodcock runs September 26, 2026 to November 9, 2026 across all zones.
