Alaska Christmas Tree Permits

Alaska is the one western state where most Christmas tree cutting is free. The Division of Forestry and Fire Protection asks for no permit and no fee on unrestricted state land around the Mat-Su valleys, the Kenai Peninsula and Fairbanks, with a 15 foot limit and one tree a household. BLM cut its permit fee to $1 for the 2025 to 2026 winter and raised the household limit to three trees.

Where to get a Christmas tree permit in Alaska

The Chugach and Tongass National Forests both say a permit may be needed to cut a Christmas tree but publish no price, limit or season. The Alaska Region permits page says only that gathering forest products like Christmas trees may require a permit, and the Chugach directs free use and firewood questions to the Seward and Glacier ranger districts. Neither forest appears on Recreation.gov tree permits, which lists no Alaska facility at all. The Division of Forestry brochures point readers to the Chugach National Forest, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, the Kenai Peninsula Borough and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough for cutting on their lands.

The details below are the 2025 season and 2024 season, the most recent the forest has posted. Each forest posts its 2026 price and dates on its permit page in the fall.
