Where to find the South Dakota trail map

South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks maintains the Black Hills trail system and the East River trails, and publishes its trail map, conditions and trail camera feeds on its snowmobiling pages. The trail geometry is held in a credentialed GIS service rather than an open one, so the agency map is the one to use.

A U.S. Forest Service route marker post numbered 192.1 beside a snow covered forest road, carrying a vertical strip of pictograms showing which uses the route is open to, including a snowmobile
The post on the right is how a federal route tells you what it is. The number is the road, and the strip of pictograms below it is the legal use list, snowmobile included. On national forest ground that post, and not any map, is the authority on whether you may be there. South Dakota trail conditions

Current South Dakota trail conditions are published by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks trail conditions. Trails close for a bridge out, a landowner withdrawing permission, a timber sale, thin base or open water, and those decisions are made locally by the club, county or district that maintains each trail, often day to day.

A yellow tracked grooming tractor parked in falling snow with a wide steel drag hitched behind it and a second drag stacked at the edge of the clearing
The machine that makes the difference between a trail and a field. The tractor packs, and the steel drag behind it cuts the moguls down and lays a flat surface that then sets hard overnight. Grooming is why trail systems have opening dates at all: the base has to be deep enough to carry this before anybody can run it. “Grooming unit and drag” — Magnum x, via English Wikipedia — Public domain

South Dakota snowmobile season dates

Statewide season

December 15 to March 31

South Dakota publishes the latest opening date of any state in this set. The Black Hills network and the East River trails share the window, and the state runs two separate condition feeds for the two halves of the state because they behave nothing alike.

Season dates are the legal window. Whether a trail is groomed or rideable on a given day depends on snow and on the club or county that maintains it.

Season window read from South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks snowmobiling page on September 4, 2026.

Permits

South Dakota registration and trail pass

Registration only, trail funding folded in

One thing to buy. The state takes its grooming money out of the registration rather than selling a pass on top, so there is nothing else to hunt for at the counter.

What South Dakota charges, as published by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks snowmobiling page
What it isAmountTerm
Resident licence$10one year, from the county treasurer
Non-resident temporary permit$40five days, for sleds not licensed anywhere
Motorcycle converted to a snowmobile$20Dec 1 to Mar 31

A sled validly licensed in another state may be ridden in South Dakota on that home registration, so the five day permit is for machines with no licence anywhere rather than for visitors generally. South Dakota also requires proof of liability insurance to ride road rights of way and public trails, which is unusual and easy to overlook.

Permit rules read from South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks snowmobiling page on September 4, 2026.

About

South Dakota snowmobiling at a glance

South Dakota points riders at a million acres of ponderosa pine in the Black Hills on one side of the state and open prairie trail on the other.

A long row of snowmobiles parked in front of a line of log cabins under a deep blue sky, with heavily tracked snow filling the foreground
A staging yard on a clear morning, with the snow in front of it churned by a hundred passes. Trail systems are economies as much as they are recreation: the lodging, the fuel and the food along a corridor are usually what pays for a town to care whether the corridor is groomed. “Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway, Ready to Go” — U.S. Department of Transportation, National Scenic Byways collection, held by the National Archives — Public domain
