Wisconsin trail conditions

Current Wisconsin trail conditions are published by Travel Wisconsin snow conditions report. Trails close for a bridge out, a landowner withdrawing permission, a timber sale, thin base or open water, and those decisions are made locally by the club, county or district that maintains each trail, often day to day.

A yellow tracked grooming tractor parked in falling snow with a wide steel drag hitched behind it and a second drag stacked at the edge of the clearing
The machine that makes the difference between a trail and a field. The tractor packs, and the steel drag behind it cuts the moguls down and lays a flat surface that then sets hard overnight. Grooming is why trail systems have opening dates at all: the base has to be deep enough to carry this before anybody can run it. “Grooming unit and drag” — Magnum x, via English Wikipedia — Public domain
Season

Wisconsin snowmobile season dates

Set by county or club

Wisconsin trails open and close BY COUNTY. A county board or its designee opens the trails in that county when the base is right, which is why a Vilas County trail can be running while a county two hours south is bare. There is no statewide opening date. The map on this page carries the contributing county on every line, so it shows you which county to ask.

Season dates are the legal window. Whether a trail is groomed or rideable on a given day depends on snow and on the club or county that maintains it.

Season window read from Wisconsin DNR snowmobile topic page on September 4, 2026.

Permits

Wisconsin registration and trail pass

Registration plus a separate trail pass

Two things to buy. The registration makes the machine legal; the trail pass funds and licenses the groomed network, and visitors usually need it too.

Current Wisconsin fees are set by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Wisconsin runs a registration plus a separate trail pass, and the DNR publishes the current prices. Note that there is no five day non-resident snowmobile pass in Wisconsin. The five day passes are for all-terrain and off-highway motorcycles, and riders arrive at the counter expecting one every winter.

It publishes the current amounts and is linked on this page.

Permit rules read from Wisconsin DNR snowmobile topic page on September 4, 2026.

About this map

About the Wisconsin trail data

The Wisconsin Office of Outdoor Recreation publishes a single statewide trails layer that carries 13,325 snowmobile flagged segments, each stamped with the county or agency that contributed it. It is a roll-up of the county grant programme rather than one authority's inventory, which is exactly what Wisconsin's trail system actually is.

The layer is published by the Wisconsin Office of Outdoor Recreation as a statewide roll-up: each line carries the name of the county or agency that contributed it, which is how a state with no single trail authority ends up with a single trail dataset.

The top of a trail on a bad visibility day, with the machines parked at a summit hut. Trail systems climb, and the weather at the top of one is routinely a different weather from the weather at the bottom, which is why riders check the summit forecast as well as the trailhead. “Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway, Trails End Atop a Snow-capped Mountain” — U.S. Department of Transportation, National Scenic Byways collection, held by the National Archives — Public domain
