During severe winter weather UDOT can require traction equipment in set locations, sometimes up to 24 hours before a storm. Four wheel and all wheel drive vehicles need M+S or three peak mountain snowflake tires or devices on two drive tires; two wheel drive cars need three peak mountain snowflake tires or devices on all drive tires. The Cottonwood Canyons are a stricter Class 3 area requiring 5/32 inch tread.
