Washington’s chain law
WSDOT can post a traction advisory, chains required for vehicles over 10,000 GVW, or chains required on all vehicles except all wheel drive. When chains are required and nothing else will do, the requirement applies to studded tires too. Vehicles over 10,000 pounds must carry chains on listed routes from November 1 to April 1.
Such signs or traffic control devices shall in no event prohibit the use of studded tires from November 1st to April 1st, but when the department determines that chains are required and that no other traction equipment will suffice, the requirement is applicable to all types of tires including studded tires.Dangerous road conditions requiring special tires, chains, or traction equipment, RCW 47.36.250 (Washington State Legislature), read September 22, 2026.
