Cross-Country Skiing in Illinois: Where the Trails Are

Illinois has one real nordic network and it belongs to a county: McHenry County packs and tracks ten of its conservation sites once four inches of snow are down, two of them under solar lights, while the state parks list skiing as an activity and groom none of it.

A skate ski trail differs from a traditional cross-country ski trail by being packed, but not tracked. The trail at Silver Creek is a 1 ½ mile, relatively flat, trail loop.

These are real ski trails on real agency pages, and some of them sit in the finest winter country Illinois has. What none of them says is that anything has been down the trail. That may mean the grooming happens and the page has not been written to say so, or it may mean you are breaking your own track, which is a fine day out as long as you knew before you left the house.

When

When the Illinois nordic season runs

A nordic season is set by snow rather than by statute, so what follows is a usual range and a rule, not an opening date anyone is bound to. Grooming starts when there is enough base to run a machine without dragging the ground up through the snow, which in most of this country is somewhere between four and eight inches of settled cover.

Nothing is groomed until the snow arrives. McHenry County packs and tracks its ski trails once four inches are on the ground, which is the only trigger any Illinois agency publishes.

Illinois cross-country skiing questions

A red snowmobile towing a steel roller and track-setter, parked on fresh snow beside a pair of parallel classic tracks running away between the pines
The whole vertical in one frame: a snowmobile, a roller behind it, and the two parallel grooves it has just pressed into the snow. Most trail systems are groomed by a machine this size rather than by a snowcat, which is why grooming here is a volunteer or a single staff member with a night to spare, and why it stops the moment either runs out. “Cross Country Ski Trail Grooming with a snowmobile and a roller”, David Haile, CC BY-SA 4.0
