Cross-Country Skiing in Nevada: Where the Trails Are

Nevada has very little groomed cross country skiing: one donation supported nonprofit grooms the trails off the Mt Rose Highway above Reno, Spooner Lake State Park on the Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe has a community grooming partnership with that same nonprofit, and everywhere else in the state, including the Ruby Mountains and the country around Ely, people ski on ungroomed forest roads and summer trails.

Each of these states in its own words that it grooms, sets classic track or cuts a skate lane. Where the manager publishes a grooming report, the link under the card is the one to read the night before you go, because a grooming schedule is an intention and the weather is the other party to it.

When

When the Nevada nordic season runs

A nordic season is set by snow rather than by statute, so what follows is a usual range and a rule, not an opening date anyone is bound to. Grooming starts when there is enough base to run a machine without dragging the ground up through the snow, which in most of this country is somewhere between four and eight inches of settled cover.

there is no published statewide grooming calendar; the two groomed systems both sit high on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe and run when there is enough snow, which usually means some part of December through March

Who grooms it

Who runs the trails in Nevada, and who reports

The kind of outfit that grooms a trail turns out to predict whether anybody posts that they did it. Across the whole country, county and city park systems report nearly every time and national forest districts report least, and the shares below are the national figures for the kinds of manager present in Nevada.

  1. Volunteer ski cluba volunteer ski club26 of 43 post a report
  2. State parkthe state park system35 of 60 post a report

The whole vertical in one frame: a snowmobile, a roller behind it, and the two parallel grooves it has just pressed into the snow. Most trail systems are groomed by a machine this size rather than by a snowcat, which is why grooming here is a volunteer or a single staff member with a night to spare, and why it stops the moment either runs out. “Cross Country Ski Trail Grooming with a snowmobile and a roller”, David Haile, CC BY-SA 4.0
