Cross-Country Skiing in California: Where the Trails Are

California's cross country skiing sits in the Sierra Nevada and on Mount Shasta, where the state sells one SNO-Park parking permit that opens eighteen plowed lots, and the actual grooming is done by a handful of nonprofit nordic centers, the Town of Mammoth Lakes, a few state parks and the national forests.

These are real ski trails on real agency pages, and some of them sit in the finest winter country California has. What none of them says is that anything has been down the trail. That may mean the grooming happens and the page has not been written to say so, or it may mean you are breaking your own track, which is a fine day out as long as you knew before you left the house.

What it costs

The California pass, and what it covers

SNO-Park permit, $15 a day, $40 for the season

parking at any of the eighteen plowed SNO-Park lots in the Sierra Nevada, which are the trailheads for most of the state's non-motorized winter trails; it is a parking permit and not a trail fee, so a club nordic center still charges its own pass on top

California's 18 SNO-PARKs, cleared parking areas for vehicles, provide opportunities for non-motorized winter activities, including cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snow play.

A state pass and a trail fee are different transactions, and a club-run nordic center inside a state park will often want both. The pass price on each card above is what that system publishes.

When

When the California nordic season runs

A nordic season is set by snow rather than by statute, so what follows is a usual range and a rule, not an opening date anyone is bound to. Grooming starts when there is enough base to run a machine without dragging the ground up through the snow, which in most of this country is somewhere between four and eight inches of settled cover.

November 1 to May 30, though the state's SNO-Park permit window runs from November into late spring, which is the outer edge of the season; the club nordic centers groom a shorter stretch inside it, roughly December into early April

Who grooms it

Who runs the trails in California, and who reports

The kind of outfit that grooms a trail turns out to predict whether anybody posts that they did it. Across the whole country, county and city park systems report nearly every time and national forest districts report least, and the shares below are the national figures for the kinds of manager present in California.

California cross-country skiing questions

A red snowmobile towing a steel roller and track-setter, parked on fresh snow beside a pair of parallel classic tracks running away between the pines
The whole vertical in one frame: a snowmobile, a roller behind it, and the two parallel grooves it has just pressed into the snow. Most trail systems are groomed by a machine this size rather than by a snowcat, which is why grooming here is a volunteer or a single staff member with a night to spare, and why it stops the moment either runs out. “Cross Country Ski Trail Grooming with a snowmobile and a roller”, David Haile, CC BY-SA 4.0
