Cross-Country Skiing in Indiana: Where the Trails Are

Indiana is not a grooming state: a handful of state parks list cross-country skiing among their winter activities, Pokagon rents skis and calls itself the state parks' winter wonderland, and only Salamonie Lake, which keeps a trail named for skiing, says its trails are groomed at all.

The place that names a ski trail without claiming a machine

These are real ski trails on real agency pages, and some of them sit in the finest winter country Indiana has. What none of them says is that anything has been down the trail. That may mean the grooming happens and the page has not been written to say so, or it may mean you are breaking your own track, which is a fine day out as long as you knew before you left the house.

A state pass and a trail fee are different transactions, and a club-run nordic center inside a state park will often want both. The pass price on each card above is what that system publishes.

Indiana cross-country skiing questions

A red snowmobile towing a steel roller and track-setter, parked on fresh snow beside a pair of parallel classic tracks running away between the pines
The whole vertical in one frame: a snowmobile, a roller behind it, and the two parallel grooves it has just pressed into the snow. Most trail systems are groomed by a machine this size rather than by a snowcat, which is why grooming here is a volunteer or a single staff member with a night to spare, and why it stops the moment either runs out. “Cross Country Ski Trail Grooming with a snowmobile and a roller”, David Haile, CC BY-SA 4.0
