The Michigan pass, and what it covers

Recreation Passport, $15 for the season

One vehicle pass that gets you into the state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds and state trailheads where nearly all of Michigan's groomed nordic trails begin. Michigan plated vehicles pay $15 a year at licence plate renewal, or $29 for two years; out of state vehicles pay $42 a year or $12 a day.

The Recreation Passport is your year-round pass to Michigan’s great outdoors. It grants motorized vehicle entry to all 103 Michigan state parks and recreation areas, 140-plus state forest campgrounds, nearly 1,000 boating access sites and thousands of miles of trails – all year long!
Recreation Passport, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, read September 23, 2026. Read it at the source

A state pass and a trail fee are different transactions, and a club-run nordic center inside a state park will often want both. The pass price on each card above is what that system publishes.

When

When the Michigan nordic season runs

A nordic season is set by snow rather than by statute, so what follows is a usual range and a rule, not an opening date anyone is bound to. Grooming starts when there is enough base to run a machine without dragging the ground up through the snow, which in most of this country is somewhere between four and eight inches of settled cover.

December 1 to March 31, though Grooming on the state forest pathways runs through the winter, with the DNR naming Dec. 1 to March 31 as the season and adding that it depends on the weather.

Who grooms it

Who runs the trails in Michigan, and who reports

The kind of outfit that grooms a trail turns out to predict whether anybody posts that they did it. Across the whole country, county and city park systems report nearly every time and national forest districts report least, and the shares below are the national figures for the kinds of manager present in Michigan.

Michigan cross-country skiing questions

A red snowmobile towing a steel roller and track-setter, parked on fresh snow beside a pair of parallel classic tracks running away between the pines
The whole vertical in one frame: a snowmobile, a roller behind it, and the two parallel grooves it has just pressed into the snow. Most trail systems are groomed by a machine this size rather than by a snowcat, which is why grooming here is a volunteer or a single staff member with a night to spare, and why it stops the moment either runs out. “Cross Country Ski Trail Grooming with a snowmobile and a roller”, David Haile, CC BY-SA 4.0
