The short answer

What a season in Mississippi actually costs to start

Tags includedMississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks

A resident hunting licence in Mississippi is $25.00, sold as the All Game Hunting/Freshwater Fishing. Mississippi is one of eleven in this reading where the tags come with the licence rather than on top of it, which makes the price on the fee page the price of the hunt. 39 of the 50 states are built the other way, and in those the licence is the smaller half. A Mississippi resident's $25 All Game licence already covers deer, turkey and hog with no tag to buy, while a nonresident pays $300 for the same licence and then $100 more for the deer permit and $100 for the turkey stamp, and every licence runs a year from the start date chosen at purchase.

  • Resident licence $25.00, the All Game Hunting/Freshwater Fishing
  • Nonresident licence $300.00
  • First deer on top of it $14.00, the Archery/Primitive Weapon/Crossbow
  • The licence runs runs a licence 365 days from the day it was bought
  • Hunter education required of anyone born on or after 1972

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks sells it through its own licensing system, which is where a fee change appears first.

What the agency sells

Every Mississippi hunting licence, at the price Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks prints

Everything a Mississippi licence holder needs for the species it names is in the licence itself. That is unusual: 39 of the 50 states read here sell the animal separately from the right to hunt it, and Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont and West Virginia do not.

The second purchase

The tags Mississippi covers, and the few it still prices separately

A tag is attached to one animal of one species, and the last column is the part that decides a calendar rather than a budget. Over the counter means it can be bought on the way to the woods. A draw means the application closed months ago.

Nothing in the Mississippi fee pages read here is allocated by a draw, so the tags below are bought rather than applied for. 35 of the 50 states run a draw for at least one species, which puts the decision months ahead of the hunt.

Tags and permits read off Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks's own fee pages, dearest resident price first.

The clock

When a Mississippi hunting license expires 365 days

Mississippi runs a licence 365 days from the day it was bought, so the month it was bought in makes no difference to what it is worth. 9 of the 50 states read here run instead to 31 December, where a November purchase is a purchase with weeks left in it.

A Mississippi licence runs a year from the start date set when it is bought rather than to a fixed calendar date, and the short term ones expire at midnight after their run of consecutive days.

This license is valid for one year from license start date.

The requirement people find out about at the counter

Mississippi hunter education: born on or after 1972

Mississippi hangs hunter education on a birth date rather than on an age: the requirement reaches anybody born after 1972. Every state that publishes a cutoff publishes a different one, and across this reading they run from 1949 to 1986, which is why a national answer to this question is always wrong somewhere.

Mississippi asks for the course before a licence is sold to anyone born on or after 1 January 1972, and sells a one time apprentice licence to a resident who has not taken it.

Hunter Education - All persons born on or after January 1, 1972, must satisfactorily complete a hunter education course approved by the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks before purchasing a Mississippi hunting license. If it is determined that the holder was not entitled to issuance or obtained the license or hunter education certificate by fraudulent means, the license will be revoked or canceled. It is unlawful to issue a hunting license to any person in this age group without proof of completion of the hunter education course. [MS. Code 49-7-20]

A wide shallow wetland on a clear November morning, ducks scattered across the open water, a cottonwood in yellow leaf on a small island beside a low wooden viewing deck, and a flat brown horizon under a pale blue sky
Waterfowl is the clearest case of what these pages are about. The state licence is the first line on the receipt, and a duck morning adds a state stamp, a federal stamp and a harvest survey registration on top of it, none of which the licence price includes. “Llano Seco Unit (2024)-L1006548”, Frank Schulenburg, CC BY-SA 4.0
Which price applies

Who counts as a Mississippi resident

Mississippi defines a resident in its own words rather than by a count of days, and the definition is quoted below because the price on one side of it is rarely close to the price on the other.

ONLY PERSONS DOMICILED WITHIN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AS DEFINED IN SECTION 49-7-3 OF THE MISSISSIPPI CODE, AS AMENDED, ARE ENTITLED TO OBTAIN A RESIDENT HUNTING/ FISHING LICENSE. ... If you hold a current MISSISSIPPI driver's license, you are entitled to purchase a resident hunting license.

How Mississippi compares

39 of 50 states sell the animal separately from the right to hunt it

Mississippi is one of 11 states in this reading that print the tags on the licence, which is why its fee page price is the price of the hunt. In the other 39, the licence is the first of two purchases and the number a search result shows is the smaller half.

Resident licences across these states run from $10 to $64.54, and nonresident licences from $50 to $410, which is the widest spread on any licence this site has read. 25 states run a licence year of their own, 9 give a full year from the day of sale, and 9 end it on 31 December whatever month it was bought.

The national table puts Mississippi beside every other state on licence price, first tag, and the two added together.
