The short answer

What a season in Oklahoma actually costs to start

Tags on topOklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation

A resident hunting licence in Oklahoma is $36, sold as the Annual Hunting. Hunting a deer on it means buying the Deer Gun as well, at $36, so the first day costs $72 rather than $36. That is 100% more than the licence price a search result would have shown. 39 of the 50 states read here work the same way. The licence itself runs different licences on different clocks, so the expiry depends on which one is in the wallet.

  • Resident licence $36, the Annual Hunting
  • Nonresident licence $209
  • First deer on top of it $36, the Deer Gun
  • What the first morning costs $72
  • The licence runs runs different licences on different clocks, so the expiry depends on which one is in the wallet

Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation sells it through its own licensing system, which is where a fee change appears first.

The second purchase

The tags and permits that sit on top of an Oklahoma licence

A tag is attached to one animal of one species, and the last column is the part that decides a calendar rather than a budget. Over the counter means it can be bought on the way to the woods. A draw means the application closed months ago.

Nothing in the Oklahoma fee pages read here is allocated by a draw, so the tags below are bought rather than applied for. 35 of the 50 states run a draw for at least one species, which puts the decision months ahead of the hunt.

The clock

When a Oklahoma hunting license expires Mixed

Oklahoma runs different licences on different clocks, so the expiry depends on which one is in the wallet. One counter sells two licences that stop working on two different days. The fee table prints both prices and neither rule. The sentence the state uses is quoted below and links to the page it came from.

Most Oklahoma licences run the calendar year and expire on 31 December, but the annual hunting, combination and youth super licences run 365 days from the day they are bought, and the waterfowl and federal stamps run 1 July to 30 June.

Unless otherwise noted below, all licenses are valid from Jan. 1- Dec. 31. ... Annual Hunting | Residents age 18 or older | $36 | 365 Days ... Resident and nonresident youth annual super licenses are valid for 365 days and will cover any open hunting season during that time.

The requirement people find out about at the counter

Hunter education in Oklahoma

Oklahoma requires hunter education, and it sets the requirement without a birth year cutoff, so the test is what the applicant has done rather than when they were born. 29 of the 50 states read here use a birth year instead, and those years run from 1949 to 1986.

Oklahoma sets its hunter education rule by age rather than a birth year: anyone 30 or younger who is not certified must buy an apprentice designated licence and hunt with a qualifying accompanying hunter, and anyone 31 or older is exempt.

Hunters 30 years of age and younger: Anyone who is not Hunter Education certified (unless exempt) must buy a hunting license that is apprentice-designated. Such hunters must abide by the accompanying hunter requirements. ... Exempt from Hunter Education Anyone 31 years of age or older

Waterfowl is the clearest case of what these pages are about. The state licence is the first line on the receipt, and a duck morning adds a state stamp, a federal stamp and a harvest survey registration on top of it, none of which the licence price includes. “Llano Seco Unit (2024)-L1006548”, Frank Schulenburg, CC BY-SA 4.0

Who counts as a Oklahoma resident

Oklahoma draws the resident line at 60 days, and the difference between the two sides of it is $36 against $209. The statutory definition is quoted below.

For a valid Oklahoma driver's license to be used as the sole source of proof of residency, it must be at least 60 days from the date the license was issued, except for lifetime license applicants, whose license must have been issued for six months or longer. ... A nonresident is any individual who is a resident of another state or who has resided in Oklahoma for a period of less than 60 days whether or not he or she intends to make Oklahoma his or her home.

How Oklahoma compares

39 of 50 states sell the animal separately from the right to hunt it

Oklahoma works the way most of the country does. Of the 50 states read here, 39 sell the tag apart from the licence and 11 print it on the licence instead. Where the tag is separate, the middle state adds 95% to the licence price before anybody has left the driveway.

Resident licences across these states run from $10 to $64.54, and nonresident licences from $50 to $410, which is the widest spread on any licence this site has read. 25 states run a licence year of their own, 9 give a full year from the day of sale, and 9 end it on 31 December whatever month it was bought.

The national table puts Oklahoma beside every other state on licence price, first tag, and the two added together.
