Oak wilt
Bretziella fagacearum
A fungus that plugs an oak's water vessels. A red oak can go from green to bare in a few weeks in midsummer.
- Kills
- Red oak group fast, white oak group slowly
- When you would notice it
- Jun 1 to Aug 31: a single oak browning from the top down and shedding half green leaves while its neighbours stay green.
Commonly confused with Oak wilt, bur oak blight, anthracnose and plain drought all brown an oak. Only a laboratory can tell you which, and this is the single most common case where a homeowner needs a diagnosis before a decision.
