The season

What fills Cumberland Falls, and when

A big river fall that runs year round and roars in spring. The other calendar here is lunar: the moonbow appears on clear nights around the full moon, which is a schedule the park publishes rather than a weather forecast.

Typical best flow: March through May

What the agency itself says
Known as the Niagara of the South, the 125-foot curtain of water falling into a boulder-strewn gorge is dramatic day or night. But it is only during a full moon that you can see the moonbow, a phenomenon not found anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere!

A rain-fed Appalachian falls runs on the last few weeks of weather, not on a snowpack calendar. Wet winters and springs are the fat season; a dry late summer thins it out within days. “Looking Glass Falls, North Carolina, April 2025” by Bill McMannis, CC BY 2.0

Gauge: USGS 03404000 CUMBERLAND RIVER AT WILLIAMSBURG, KY, upstream of the falls. The gauge reads the river, not the brink of the falls, so treat it as the trend line rather than a turnstile.

Yosemite Falls in May, running on snowmelt that will be gone by late summer. The National Park Service tells visitors the falls can be dry by August, which is why every falls page here starts from its watershed. “Tourists below Yosemite Falls (39832011431)” by Mike McBey, CC BY 2.0
