The name

Why it is called the Snow Moon

Captain Jonathan Carver wrote in the 1760s that the Snow Moon got its name because more snow commonly falls during this month than any other. Several peoples named February by the animals instead.

These names come from Native American, Colonial American and European traditions, and nations named the moons by their own seasons, so no one name belongs to a single people. Names follow the Old Farmer's Almanac.

  • Bald Eagle Moon (Cree)
  • Bear Moon (Ojibwe)
  • Black Bear Moon (Tlingit)
