Why it is called the Harvest Moon
The September full moon is the Corn Moon because corn was ready to harvest at this time. When it falls closest to the September equinox it is called the Harvest Moon instead.
The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the September equinox. Most years it falls in September, and about every three years it falls in October.
These names come from Native American, Colonial American and European traditions, and nations named the moons by their own seasons, so no one name belongs to a single people. Names follow the Old Farmer's Almanac.
- Corn Maker Moon (Western Abenaki)
- Corn Harvest Moon (Dakota)
