Why it is called the Buck Moon
July is when the antlers of bucks are in full growth, and Carver noted the name in the 1760s. In other places the same weeks were the berry month or the salmon month.
These names come from Native American, Colonial American and European traditions, and nations named the moons by their own seasons, so no one name belongs to a single people. Names follow the Old Farmer's Almanac.
- Berry Moon (Anishinaabe)
- Salmon Moon (Tlingit)
