The name

Why it is called the Beaver Moon

In November the beavers finish their preparations for winter and retreat into their lodges, and Carver recorded the name in the 1760s. Other peoples named the month for the deer rut or the first hard frost.

These names come from Native American, Colonial American and European traditions, and nations named the moons by their own seasons, so no one name belongs to a single people. Names follow the Old Farmer's Almanac.

  • Deer Rutting Moon (Dakota and Lakota)
  • Frost Moon (Cree and Assiniboine)
