Why it is called the Strawberry Moon
The Strawberry Moon was used by the Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota and Lakota peoples, among others, for the short season when wild strawberries ripen. It has nothing to do with the moon’s color.
These names come from Native American, Colonial American and European traditions, and nations named the moons by their own seasons, so no one name belongs to a single people. Names follow the Old Farmer's Almanac.
- Berries Ripen Moon (Haida)
- Blooming Moon (Anishinaabe)
