The four questions in one

South Dakota deer seasons, 2026-27

“When does deer season open” is four questions wearing one coat. South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks dates white-tailed and mule deer seasons separately by weapon, so each one is below under the agency’s own name for it, with the zone rows exactly as the agency lists them.

South Dakota does not run one general firearms season. It runs separate regional deer seasons, each drawn for on its own licence, with the Black Hills and Custer State Park in November and the two river seasons a fortnight apart. The West River and East River Special Buck seasons run the same dates as their regular counterparts.

South Dakota youth deer season: read them on the agency’s own page

GFP's 2026 key dates list carries a dated Apprentice and Mentored deer season of Sep 12, 2026 to Jan 1, 2027 but no separately dated youth deer season, while its hunting handbook refers to youth deer hunting seasons being closed in nine southeastern counties. The two documents describe the youth season differently, so GFP's own pages are the source for its dates. South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks publishes the current dates on its own page, linked below.

Zones

South Dakota deer zones

South Dakota does not have a deer season. It has 4 of them, and the boundaries between them were drawn by South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks along highways, rivers and county fragments rather than anything you can see from a stand. In several states those boundaries are not even the same from one weapon season to the next.

This page publishes the agency’s zone names and links the agency’s own zone map, which is where a hunter’s zone is determined. A wrong zone answer is a wrong season date.
