The four questions in one

New Mexico deer seasons, 2026-27

“When does deer season open” is four questions wearing one coat. New Mexico Department of Game and Fish dates mule deer and Coues white-tailed deer seasons separately by weapon, so each one is below under the agency’s own name for it, with the zone rows exactly as the agency lists them.

New Mexico builds its deer seasons out of numbered hunt codes rather than one statewide calendar, but its bow windows are almost entirely standardised into the two above. A handful of single unit bow hunts sit outside them, in November and in the second half of January; those rows are in the department's own deer hunt code tables.

Any arms hunts

Any arms hunts opens in 5 days, on October 24, 2026 (The hunt codes the department dates in late October).

New Mexico's general rifle deer hunts are five day windows spread across a six week arc from late October into December, and the department assigns each unit to one of them by hunt code. The rows above are the department's own repeated windows; which hunt code covers which unit is in its deer tables, and the hunt code is what the licence carries.

Muzzleloader hunts

Muzzleloader hunts opens in 5 days, on October 24, 2026 (The hunt codes the department dates in late October).

Zones

New Mexico deer zones

New Mexico does not have a deer season. It has 7 of them, and the boundaries between them were drawn by New Mexico Department of Game and Fish along highways, rivers and county fragments rather than anything you can see from a stand. In several states those boundaries are not even the same from one weapon season to the next.

This page publishes the agency’s zone names and links the agency’s own zone map, which is where a hunter’s zone is determined. A wrong zone answer is a wrong season date.
