The four questions in one

Hawaii deer seasons, 2026-27

“When does deer season open” is four questions wearing one coat. Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife dates axis deer seasons separately by weapon, so each one is below under the agency’s own name for it, with the zone rows exactly as the agency lists them.

Hawaii does not run a deer season in the mainland sense on Maui. Its game mammal rules open the public hunting units year-round, and the Maui exhibit states that any deer encountered while hunting on a public hunting area on Maui may be taken. Unit E is the archery only unit. The separately dated Lanai axis deer archery hunt is announced annually and is under other seasons.

The Maui and Molokai game mammal exhibits open these units year-round for game mammals and state that any deer encountered while hunting on a public hunting area may be taken, regardless of number or sex. There is no opening or closing date to publish, which is why these rows say year-round rather than carrying a date. The Lanai general rifle hunt is a separate, dated, lottery season and is under other seasons.

Beyond the four main windows, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife dates one further season for deer. They are reproduced here under the agency’s own names, because a hunter reading a calendar needs to know which window a tag actually covers.

Zones

Hawaii deer zones

Hawaii does not have a deer season. It has 2 of them, and the boundaries between them were drawn by Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife along highways, rivers and county fragments rather than anything you can see from a stand. In several states those boundaries are not even the same from one weapon season to the next.

This page publishes the agency’s zone names and links the agency’s own zone map, which is where a hunter’s zone is determined. A wrong zone answer is a wrong season date.

Some rows above say “open year-round” rather than carrying a date. That is the agency’s own designation for those units.
