Illinois Ice Fishing Rules and Shelter Deadlines
No removal date at all, and instead a rule that switches on. From March 1 an Illinois shelter must come off whenever it is not in use and may never be left unattended. Illinois also caps the hole size and the number of poles.
Illinois is the clearest example in this vertical of a state that regulates the shelter itself rather than the calendar: the digest describes the permitted construction, not just the marking.
When a shelter has to be off the ice in Illinois
Illinois DNR publishes this, and the table below shows not only the date but how the date is set, which matters more than it sounds. A date written into a fisheries order or an administrative rule recurs every year until the rule changes. A date the agency publishes each season moves, so last winter’s date is not this winter’s. A rule stated instead of a date has to be worked out every winter, and where that is the case the table says so.
| Where it applies | Date | How the date is set |
|---|---|---|
| Statewide, the date the rule changes | March 1, 2027 | Fixed by ruleNot a removal deadline. From this date the shelter must come off whenever it is not in use and may not be left unattended at any time. |

Shelter licence
A sport fishing licence is required to fish through the ice. No separate shelter permit.
Portable shelters
Every Illinois shelter must be portable by construction: a metal or wood framework covered with canvas, paper, plastic or a similar fabric. No other construction is permitted.
What goes on the outside
Each shelter must have the owner’s name and address attached.
After the deadline
From March 1 the shelter must be removed whenever it is not in use, and it may not be left unattended at any time.

Is there an ice fishing season in Illinois?
Sport fishing is open year round statewide with a short exception list, so there is no ice season closer for walleye, sauger, muskellunge, northern pike or bass. Lake sturgeon may not be possessed at any time, which is a standing no harvest rule rather than a closed season.

What Illinois lets you set, and how wide you may cut
Both of these change at state lines, and both are looser through the ice than in open water in most of the country, which is why carrying a habit across a border is the commonest way an otherwise careful angler ends up in the wrong.
Lines and devices
Three poles or tip ups per angler, with no more than two hooks on each line. At sites carrying a two pole and line restriction the limit is two. Every pole and tip up must be constantly attended and kept under observation.
Hole size
Holes cut in the ice are limited to twelve inches in diameter.

What a Illinois fishing licence costs
A fishing licence is what governs fishing through the ice in every state on this site; almost none of them sell a separate ice licence. A resident aged 65 to 74 pays 7.75 and one aged 75 or over pays 1.50. A resident 24 hour licence is 5.50 and a non-resident three day is 15.50. A Lake Michigan salmon stamp and an inland trout stamp are 6.50 each. Residents under 16 fish free.
Resident
15 dollars annual
Non-resident
31.50 dollars annual

Where the rest of the Illinois rules live
Every ice fishing page on this site publishes what it read from a source, names the source, and says what it could not reach. It never fills a gap with a plausible number. On this subject the wrong date is not a disappointment, it is a fine, and a research pass on this batch caught search summaries fabricating year by year date tables that did not exist in the underlying agency pages at all.
Nothing. Every rule this vertical carries for Illinois was read from a Illinois DNR source and each one is shown above with its page and the date it was read.

The badge beside each state is a coverage grade for this site rather than a judgement about the state: it says how much of that state’s rule set could be read from a raw agency source.

Illinois ice fishing questions
This page covers the 2026-27 season year with data as of September 4, 2026. Every rule was restated in our own words from Illinois DNR, with the agency named and its page linked beside the rule; state agency text is not in the public domain and none of it is copied here. Where a date belongs to a season the agency has already published, the season is shown next to the date, and no date is carried forward into a season the agency has not published. Illinois DNR is the final word on the day you go. See also the national ice fishing guide.
