Minnesota Ice Fishing Rules and Shelter Deadlines
The deepest ice fishing rule set in the country, and the only one published as structured data. Minnesota licenses non-portable shelters, splits its removal deadline along a highway line drawn across the middle of the state, and runs a dark house spearing season with its own dates.
Minnesota is the one state where the season dates, the special lake rules and the lake inventory all join on the same identifier, the DOW lake number, which is why the lake finder on this page is a Minnesota tool.
When a shelter has to be off the ice in Minnesota
Minnesota DNR publishes this, and the table below shows not only the date but how the date is set, which matters more than it sounds. A date written into a fisheries order or an administrative rule recurs every year until the rule changes. A date the agency publishes each season moves, so last winter’s date is not this winter’s. A rule stated instead of a date has to be worked out every winter, and where that is the case the table says so.
| Where it applies | Date | How the date is set |
|---|---|---|
| Minnesota and Iowa border waters | February 20, 2027 | Fixed by rulePublished by the DNR without a year, alongside the dated inland deadlines on the same page. |
| Minnesota and Wisconsin border waters | March 1, 2027 | Fixed by rulePublished without a year. Wisconsin sets the same date from its own side in NR 21.07. |
| Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota border waters | March 5, 2027 | Fixed by rulePublished without a year. |
| Minnesota and Canada border waters | March 31, 2027 | Fixed by rulePublished without a year, and the latest shelter deadline in the state. |

Shelter licence
A non-portable shelter, which includes any wheeled fish house, needs a shelter licence: 15 dollars for a resident and 37 dollars for a non-resident, before any issuing fee. The licence runs from March 1 through April 30 of the following year. No shelter licence is required on the border waters shared with Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota or South Dakota.
Portable shelters
A portable is one that collapses, folds or comes apart for transport. It needs a licence and identification only when it is left unattended, which the DNR defines as every occupant being more than 200 feet away.
What goes on the outside
One of three things must be readable from outside in characters at least two inches high: the owner’s name and address, the owner’s driver licence number, or the owner’s Minnesota DNR identification number. A shelter left out overnight also needs at least two square inches of reflective material on each side.
After the deadline
After the removal date a shelter may sit on the ice between midnight and one hour before sunrise only while it is occupied or attended. Leaving one at a public access is prohibited outright.
If it is left behind
Owners who miss the deadline may be cited, and a conservation officer may confiscate, remove or destroy a structure and its contents.

Minnesota season windows that touch the ice
Walleye, sauger, northern pike and muskellunge share one season that closes on the last Sunday in February. Bass, sunfish, crappie, perch and catfish have no closed season at all. Northern pike is split across a Northeast, a North-central and a Southern zone with different dark house spearing rules in each.
| Season | Opens | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| Walleye and sauger | May 9, 2026 | February 28, 2027 |
| Northern pike, angling | May 9, 2026 | February 28, 2027 |
| Dark house spearing for northern pike | November 15, 2026 | February 28, 2027 |
| Winter stream trout lakes outside the Boundary Waters | January 16, 2027 | March 31, 2027 |
| Winter stream trout lakes inside the Boundary Waters | January 1, 2027 | March 31, 2027 |

What Minnesota lets you set, and how wide you may cut
Both of these change at state lines, and both are looser through the ice than in open water in most of the country, which is why carrying a habit across a border is the commonest way an otherwise careful angler ends up in the wrong.
Lines and devices
Two lines through the ice, against one line in open water. Designated trout lakes and streams allow one line. Border waters and Lake Superior may allow more.

What a Minnesota fishing licence costs
A fishing licence is what governs fishing through the ice in every state on this site; almost none of them sell a separate ice licence. Short term licences run from 12 dollars for a resident 24 hour up to 43 dollars for a non-resident seven day, and a married couple resident licence is 40 dollars. A trout stamp is 10 dollars. Residents under 16 and 90 or over need no licence. The licence year runs March 1 to the end of February.
Resident
25 dollars annual
Non-resident
51 dollars annual

Which Minnesota lakes carry their own rules
Minnesota is the only state whose lake inventory and regulation list share an identifier, so this is the only page on the site that can answer the question directly. Enter a ZIP and the map shows the lakes in every county that ZIP touches, marked for whether the DNR designates them as stream trout lakes with their own dated winter season or lists a special regulation written for that water alone. Nothing on the map describes ice.
Showing Minnesota lakes of 2,000 acres or more. Enter a ZIP or a lake name to narrow it. The set behind this map holds 0 lakes: every one of 500 acres or more, every designated stream trout lake, and every lake the DNR lists a special regulation for.
- Designated stream trout lake
- Carries a special regulation
- 500 acres or more, general regulations
Lake name, county and surface acres come from the Minnesota DNR hydrography layer; the stream trout designations from the DNR’s designated stream trout lake layer; the special regulation flag from the DNR’s own lake regulation list, joined on the DOW lake number. Circle size is surface acreage.
Where the rest of the Minnesota rules live
Every ice fishing page on this site publishes what it read from a source, names the source, and says what it could not reach. It never fills a gap with a plausible number. On this subject the wrong date is not a disappointment, it is a fine, and a research pass on this batch caught search summaries fabricating year by year date tables that did not exist in the underlying agency pages at all.
Nothing. Every rule this vertical carries for Minnesota was read from a Minnesota DNR source and each one is shown above with its page and the date it was read.

Minnesota ice fishing questions
This page covers the 2026-27 season year with data as of September 4, 2026. Every rule was restated in our own words from Minnesota DNR, with the agency named and its page linked beside the rule; state agency text is not in the public domain and none of it is copied here. Where a date belongs to a season the agency has already published, the season is shown next to the date, and no date is carried forward into a season the agency has not published. Minnesota DNR is the final word on the day you go. See also the national ice fishing guide.
