Montana Ice Fishing Rules and Shelter Deadlines

The only removal rule in this set with no calendar date in it at all. Montana requires a shelter to come off before it becomes irretrievable, or within five days of a notice from the agency, and names three lakes where shelters come off every day.

The rules, with the agency page each one came from. When a shelter has to be off, when a season opens and closes, what a licence costs, how many lines you may set and how wide a hole you may cut, each read from the agency’s own page with the day it was read printed beside it. For anything about whether ice will hold, your state agency is the authority and the water in front of you is the evidence.

Montana also stacks its licence three ways, and the aquatic invasive species pass is mandatory for every angler rather than only for boat owners.

The date with a fine attached

When a shelter has to be off the ice in Montana

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks publishes this, and the table below shows not only the date but how the date is set, which matters more than it sounds. A date written into a fisheries order or an administrative rule recurs every year until the rule changes. A date the agency publishes each season moves, so last winter’s date is not this winter’s. A rule stated instead of a date has to be worked out every winter, and where that is the case the table says so.

After the deadline

The obligation is condition based rather than dated: the owner must remove the shelter before it becomes irretrievable at the end of the season, or within five days of a removal notice from Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

That plate is the most consistently enforced part of this whole subject and its exact requirement changes at every state line: two inch characters in Minnesota and Michigan, four inch block letters in Iowa, three inch in New York, one inch square lettering in Wisconsin. “Ice fishing shelter, Superior National Forest”  Forest Service, USDA  Public domain

Openers and closers

Is there an ice fishing season in Montana?

Montana is not uniformly year round. Western District rivers and streams close for the winter while Central and Eastern District rivers and streams stay open all year. The lakes and reservoirs people actually fish through the ice fall under the open all year district defaults, and no lake specific winter closure list was found.

Cost

What a Montana fishing licence costs

A fishing licence is what governs fishing through the ice in every state on this site; almost none of them sell a separate ice licence. Every angler also needs an aquatic invasive species prevention pass, at 2 dollars for a resident and 7.50 for a non-resident. Non-resident short term licences are 14 dollars for one day and 56 for five consecutive days. Anglers 11 and under need none of the three.

Resident

21 dollars season licence, on top of an 8 dollar conservation licence

Non-resident

100 dollars season licence, on top of a 10 dollar conservation licence

Sources

Where the rest of the Montana rules live

Every ice fishing page on this site publishes what it read from a source, names the source, and says what it could not reach. It never fills a gap with a plausible number. On this subject the wrong date is not a disappointment, it is a fine, and a research pass on this batch caught search summaries fabricating year by year date tables that did not exist in the underlying agency pages at all.

Where the rest of the Montana rules live

  • Shelter marking requirements.
  • A lake specific winter closure list. The district defaults were read; a per water list was not reachable.

Each of those is published by the agency, and the link above goes straight to it. A date in the wrong place is how somebody gets fined, so the agency’s own document is the one to act on.

Montana ice fishing questions

This page covers the 2026-27 season year with data as of September 4, 2026. Every rule was restated in our own words from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, with the agency named and its page linked beside the rule; state agency text is not in the public domain and none of it is copied here. Where a date belongs to a season the agency has already published, the season is shown next to the date, and no date is carried forward into a season the agency has not published. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is the final word on the day you go. See also the national ice fishing guide.
