North Dakota Ice Fishing Rules and Shelter Deadlines
One statewide date written into the regulations, a dark house spearing season with its own dates, and the only hole marking rule in the country that specifies how far away the marker has to be visible from.
North Dakota is also one of two states in this set with a winter free fishing weekend, which is unusual enough to be worth planning a trip around.
When a shelter has to be off the ice in North Dakota
North Dakota Game and Fish publishes this, and the table below shows not only the date but how the date is set, which matters more than it sounds. A date written into a fisheries order or an administrative rule recurs every year until the rule changes. A date the agency publishes each season moves, so last winter’s date is not this winter’s. A rule stated instead of a date has to be worked out every winter, and where that is the case the table says so.
| Where it applies | Date | How the date is set |
|---|---|---|
| All waters, statewide | March 15, 2027 | Fixed by ruleFrom midnight. No zone exception is stated. |

Shelter licence
No shelter licence found in the regulations.
Portable shelters
The statewide date applies to unoccupied ice houses. After it, a house may be used only if it is removed daily.
What goes on the outside
The regulations do not require shelter marking. The marking rule in the same chapter applies to bait traps.
After the deadline
From the date below, all unoccupied ice houses must be off all waters until ice out, and it is unlawful to leave a fish house on state owned or managed land after March 15 of any fishing year.

North Dakota season windows that touch the ice
Most species are open year round under a proclamation that currently runs across two licence years. Dark house spear and bow fishing has its own dated winter window.

What North Dakota lets you set, and how wide you may cut
Both of these change at state lines, and both are looser through the ice than in open water in most of the country, which is why carrying a habit across a border is the commonest way an otherwise careful angler ends up in the wrong.
Hole size
A hole larger than ten inches across left behind after ice fishing or after a dark house is moved must be marked, with a natural object or a brightly painted or coloured wooden lath, visible from at least 150 feet. The marker has to be with the angler as soon as the hole is made.

What a North Dakota fishing licence costs
A fishing licence is what governs fishing through the ice in every state on this site; almost none of them sell a separate ice licence. A resident senior, disabled or veteran licence is 10 dollars and residents under 16 fish free. Non-resident short term licences are 48 dollars for three days and 58 for ten, each plus the certificate. There is no angler aquatic nuisance species fee.
Resident
27 dollars annual plus a 2 dollar certificate
Non-resident
68 dollars annual plus a 5 dollar certificate

Where the rest of the North Dakota rules live
Every ice fishing page on this site publishes what it read from a source, names the source, and says what it could not reach. It never fills a gap with a plausible number. On this subject the wrong date is not a disappointment, it is a fine, and a research pass on this batch caught search summaries fabricating year by year date tables that did not exist in the underlying agency pages at all.
Where the rest of the North Dakota rules live
- A statewide line or tip up limit was not stated in the regulations page read for this build.
Each of those is published by the agency, and the link above goes straight to it. A date in the wrong place is how somebody gets fined, so the agency’s own document is the one to act on.

The badge beside each state is a coverage grade for this site rather than a judgement about the state: it says how much of that state’s rule set could be read from a raw agency source.

North Dakota ice fishing questions
This page covers the 2026-27 season year with data as of September 4, 2026. Every rule was restated in our own words from North Dakota Game and Fish, with the agency named and its page linked beside the rule; state agency text is not in the public domain and none of it is copied here. Where a date belongs to a season the agency has already published, the season is shown next to the date, and no date is carried forward into a season the agency has not published. North Dakota Game and Fish is the final word on the day you go. See also the national ice fishing guide.
