Michigan Ice Fishing Rules and Shelter Deadlines
The only state whose shanty deadlines are written into a standing fisheries order as fixed calendar dates rather than republished every season. Four zones, four dates, and a fifth rule of its own for Lake St Clair.
Fisheries Order 251.18 also settles a detail people get wrong: putting the identification on a piece of wood or plastic and screwing that to the shanty does not satisfy the rule.
When a shelter has to be off the ice in Michigan
Michigan DNR publishes this, and the table below shows not only the date but how the date is set, which matters more than it sounds. A date written into a fisheries order or an administrative rule recurs every year until the rule changes. A date the agency publishes each season moves, so last winter’s date is not this winter’s. A rule stated instead of a date has to be worked out every winter, and where that is the case the table says so.
| Where it applies | Date | How the date is set |
|---|---|---|
| Counties not in the northern Lower Peninsula list, and the adjacent Great Lakes | March 1, 2027 | Fixed by ruleMidnight. The order says "of any year", which is what makes these dates fixed rather than annually published. |
| Thirty two named northern Lower Peninsula counties | March 15, 2027 | Fixed by ruleMidnight. The order lists the counties one by one, from Emmet and Cheboygan down to Bay. |
| Michigan and Wisconsin boundary waters | March 15, 2027 | Fixed by ruleMidnight, each year. Wisconsin sets the same date from its own side. |
| Upper Peninsula and the adjacent Great Lakes | March 31, 2027 | Fixed by ruleMidnight. The latest shanty deadline in the state. |
| Lake St Clair | February 21, 2027 | Computed from the agency ruleBefore sundown on the first Sunday after February 20, and on a daily basis after that. The date below is computed from that rule, not published as a date by the department. |

Shelter licence
No shanty licence and no fee.
Portable shelters
A tent or other temporary shelter that comes off the ice at the end of each day’s fishing is exempt from the identification requirement. After each zone deadline, a shanty may still be used as long as it leaves the ice at the end of each day’s fishing.
What goes on the outside
Identification must be on each outside side in legible alphanumeric characters at least two inches high, in a material that does not dissolve in water: the owner’s name and address, driver licence number, or sportcard number. Writing it on a separate piece of wood or plastic and attaching that does not satisfy the order.
After the deadline
After the date for the zone, a shanty may be placed and used only if it comes off at the conclusion of each day’s fishing.
If it is left behind
For Lake St Clair the order states that failing to remove a shanty in time is a violation and that the department or the local unit of government may then authorise its removal, storage or destruction.

Is there an ice fishing season in Michigan?
Walleye and northern pike are open all year on the Lower Peninsula Great Lakes and connecting waters, while inland waters run from the last Saturday in April to a fixed March 15 close. The state’s designated trout lakes are the clearest ice season fact Michigan publishes, and they are published as data.
Michigan DNR publishes its calendar season dates in the fishing guide for each new season. The trout lake designations below come from the DNR’s own live regulation layer and are current.

What a Michigan fishing licence costs
A fishing licence is what governs fishing through the ice in every state on this site; almost none of them sell a separate ice licence. A senior resident licence is 11 dollars, a daily is 10, and a voluntary youth licence is 2. Active duty military and fully disabled veterans fish free. The licence year runs April 1 to March 31.
Resident
26 dollars annual
Non-resident
76 dollars annual

Where the rest of the Michigan rules live
Every ice fishing page on this site publishes what it read from a source, names the source, and says what it could not reach. It never fills a gap with a plausible number. On this subject the wrong date is not a disappointment, it is a fine, and a research pass on this batch caught search summaries fabricating year by year date tables that did not exist in the underlying agency pages at all.
Where the rest of the Michigan rules live
- Calendar season dates for 2026-27, which Michigan DNR publishes in the fishing guide for the new season. A date published for one season is not carried into the next.
- A statewide ice fishing line or hole limit was not found in the fisheries order.
Each of those is published by the agency, and the link above goes straight to it. A date in the wrong place is how somebody gets fined, so the agency’s own document is the one to act on.

Michigan ice fishing questions
This page covers the 2026-27 season year with data as of September 4, 2026. Every rule was restated in our own words from Michigan DNR, with the agency named and its page linked beside the rule; state agency text is not in the public domain and none of it is copied here. Where a date belongs to a season the agency has already published, the season is shown next to the date, and no date is carried forward into a season the agency has not published. Michigan DNR is the final word on the day you go. See also the national ice fishing guide.
