Wisconsin Ice Fishing Rules and Shelter Deadlines
Five separate shanty removal dates, no shelter fee at all, and per lake season dates published as a map layer covering 7,018 lakes. Wisconsin also runs one of the two winter free fishing weekends in the country.
The Fox River below the De Pere dam is the sharpest exception in this whole vertical: no seasonal grace period at all, shelters off the ice daily.
When a shelter has to be off the ice in Wisconsin
Wisconsin DNR publishes this, and the table below shows not only the date but how the date is set, which matters more than it sounds. A date written into a fisheries order or an administrative rule recurs every year until the rule changes. A date the agency publishes each season moves, so last winter’s date is not this winter’s. A rule stated instead of a date has to be worked out every winter, and where that is the case the table says so.
| Where it applies | Date | How the date is set |
|---|---|---|
| Wisconsin and Minnesota boundary waters | March 1, 2027 | Fixed by ruleNR 21.07 sets this as March 1 of each year for the Mississippi River, Lake St Croix, the St Croix River and the St Louis River, so it is a rule rather than an annually published date. |
| Fox River downstream of the De Pere dam, Brown County | Daily, all season | No seasonal deadline. Shelters come off the ice daily and whenever not in use, all winter. |

Shelter licence
No shelter licence and no fee.
Portable shelters
A portable that comes off the ice at the end of each day is outside the seasonal deadline. After the deadline, portables must come off at the end of every day.
What goes on the outside
An unoccupied shelter needs the owner’s name and residential address painted or permanently affixed on the outside in English, with lettering at least one inch square. The door must have a latch that opens readily from outside whenever the shelter is occupied.
After the deadline
Portables may still be used after the dates below as long as they leave the ice whenever they are not in active use and at the end of each day.
If it is left behind
The DNR asks the public to report shanties left behind to its violation hotline, and states that the deadlines exist to avoid the cost and hazard of shanties going through.

Wisconsin season windows that touch the ice
One general inland window covers walleye, sauger and northern pike and runs from the first Saturday in May to the first Sunday in March, so the back half of it is the ice season. Muskellunge harvest closes at the end of December. Every lake carries its own dates in the DNR regulation layer.
| Season | Opens | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| General inland fishing | May 2, 2026 | March 7, 2027 |
| Walleye | May 2, 2026 | March 7, 2027 |
| Northern pike | May 2, 2026 | March 7, 2027 |
| Muskellunge harvest, statewide inland | May 2, 2026 | December 31, 2026 |

Winter free fishing weekend
January 16, 2027 to January 17, 2027. Residents and non-residents alike may fish without a licence or a stamp. All other rules still apply.
What a Wisconsin fishing licence costs
A fishing licence is what governs fishing through the ice in every state on this site; almost none of them sell a separate ice licence. A resident one day licence is 8 dollars and a junior or senior annual is 7 dollars. Non-resident short term licences run 15 dollars for one day, 29 for four days and 33 for fifteen. An inland trout stamp and a Great Lakes trout and salmon stamp are 10 dollars each. Residents 15 and under fish free.
Resident
20 dollars annual
Non-resident
55 dollars annual

Where the rest of the Wisconsin rules live
Every ice fishing page on this site publishes what it read from a source, names the source, and says what it could not reach. It never fills a gap with a plausible number. On this subject the wrong date is not a disappointment, it is a fine, and a research pass on this batch caught search summaries fabricating year by year date tables that did not exist in the underlying agency pages at all.
Where the rest of the Wisconsin rules live
- A statewide ice fishing line or tip up limit was not stated on the seasons page or in the removal release, so none is published here.
Each of those is published by the agency, and the link above goes straight to it. A date in the wrong place is how somebody gets fined, so the agency’s own document is the one to act on.

Wisconsin ice fishing questions
This page covers the 2026-27 season year with data as of September 4, 2026. Every rule was restated in our own words from Wisconsin DNR, with the agency named and its page linked beside the rule; state agency text is not in the public domain and none of it is copied here. Where a date belongs to a season the agency has already published, the season is shown next to the date, and no date is carried forward into a season the agency has not published. Wisconsin DNR is the final word on the day you go. See also the national ice fishing guide.
