Trout Stocking in Michigan

More than 20 million fish a year, over a thousand locations, more than 100,000 miles of truck travel. Michigan DNR publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where the stocking answer lives. Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

Where Michigan publishes its stocking record

Michigan Department of Natural Resources publishes a searchable record of what went into which water, which the department warns can lag the truck by weeks. It comes out as a database updated after the fact, not a forward schedule, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How Michigan DNR sets the Michigan trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what Michigan DNR does publish.

Published by the agency

No bar is drawn here because Michigan DNR has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

The agency sets its seasons water by water or inside its own regulations, and publishes them there.

Michigan sets trout seasons by water type and by region in its own fishing guide, and the Great Lakes fishery runs on different rules again.

Where to look

Where to find Michigan stocked waters

Michigan DNR publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Michigan water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Michigan does it

The Michigan trout programme

Michigan's stocking programme is the largest in this vertical by an order of magnitude and it is mostly not about put and take trout: steelhead, Atlantic, Chinook and coho salmon, splake, muskellunge and walleye share the trucks with brown, brook, lake and rainbow trout. The department attaches a warning worth repeating on every stocking database anywhere: it can take several weeks for a stocking to appear in the record.

What goes in, and when. More than 20 million fish a year, over a thousand locations, more than 100,000 miles of truck travel. Mid March to early June.
