Trout Stocking in Rhode Island

More than 60,000 brook, brown, rainbow and golden rainbow trout into over 100 freshwater locations. RI DEM publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

The source that governs

Where Rhode Island publishes its stocking record

Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management publishes the full list of stocked waters, with stocking updates announced as they happen. It comes out as announced per stocking round rather than as a running schedule, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

The Rhode Island trout season dates RI DEM published

These are RI DEM's own dates for the season they name, with the year attached and the page they were read from underneath.

Dates publishedSeason year 2026
  • Statewide trout seasonApril 11, 2026 to February 28, 2027The department publishes this season as a single window running from opening day into the following winter.

The agency has posted dated openers and they are reproduced here with the source.

The department also states the underlying recurring rule: opening day occurs annually on the second Saturday in April, and the season continues through the last day of February at midnight.

That window is open on the date this page was built, September 3, 2026. It closes February 28, 2027 on RI DEM's own published schedule, and the agency can change it, so check the link above before you go.

Where to look

Where to find Rhode Island stocked waters

RI DEM publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Rhode Island water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Rhode Island does it

The Rhode Island trout programme

Rhode Island stocks more than a hundred waters in the smallest state in the country, which gives it one of the highest densities of stocked trout water anywhere. There is a winter round from January, then the main spring round before opening day, then repeat stockings through the spring to keep the fishery going. It is also one of the few states whose season is not a spring-to-autumn affair at all: the published window runs from April straight through the following February.

How this record was checked. Designated Trout Waters page fetched and read in session on 2026-09-03, title "Designated Trout Waters | Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management". CORRECTION MADE HERE: the earlier record shipped this opener with no closing date. The department's own page carries the line "2026/27 Season Update: April 11, 2026 to February 28, 2027", so the season end is now published with it, which also makes Rhode Island the one state on this site whose published trout season is open on the date this snapshot was built.
