Trout Stocking in Delaware

Rainbow, brown and brook trout into selected northern New Castle County streams and into Tidbury Pond in Kent County and Newton Pond near Greenwood in Sussex County. DNREC publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where Delaware publishes its stocking record

Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife publishes the northern New Castle County streams and the Kent and Sussex ponds the division stocks, with a tentative stocking schedule posted alongside them. It comes out as a tentative seasonal schedule, revised in place as the season approaches, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How DNREC sets the Delaware trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what DNREC does publish.

A recurring rule, not a date

No bar is drawn here because DNREC has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

  • Youth trout fishing day, ponds and streamsthe traditional regular Saturday opening day for those waters
  • Opening day for all other anglersthe Sunday following the youth opening day

The agency publishes a recurring rule rather than a calendar date, and the rule is reproduced in its own words.

The division states its openers as a recurring Saturday and Sunday pattern rather than as calendar dates.

“Since Delaware stream temperatures are marginal at best for trout survival in the summer and no reproduction has been noted, stocked fish are meant to be taken.”

Where to look

Where to find Delaware stocked waters

DNREC publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Delaware water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

The window DNREC describes is: within two weeks of the spring opening date and on into the season, plus a supplemental autumn stocking on White Clay Creek.

How Delaware does it

The Delaware trout programme

Delaware sits at the southern edge of where a put and take trout programme works on the Atlantic coastal plain, and the division is unusually blunt about what that means. Its own page says stream temperatures in Delaware are marginal at best for trout survival through the summer and that no reproduction has been noted, so the fish that go in are meant to come out. The fishery is concentrated in the piedmont streams of northern New Castle County, with two stocked ponds carrying the programme south into Kent and Sussex.

How this record was checked. Freshwater Trout Fishing page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "Freshwater Trout Fishing - DNREC". The citation is the division's own freshwater trout fishing page, which carries the stocking and season material. That page states the opener as a recurring Saturday and Sunday pattern rather than as a calendar date.
