Trout Stocking in Ohio

Catchable rainbow trout of 10 to 14 inches, and brown trout of 6 to 9 inches in October. Ohio DNR publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

The source that governs

Where Ohio publishes its stocking record

Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife publishes the dated list of spring rainbow trout releases, plus a public database of state hatchery stockings back to 1970. It comes out as a dated release list per season, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How Ohio DNR sets the Ohio trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what Ohio DNR does publish.

No season opener

No bar is drawn here because Ohio DNR has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

This state runs no trout season opener; the water is open on the agency's own terms year round.

Ohio does not gate its stocked trout releases behind an opening day; the release dates themselves are the calendar.

Read from Rainbow Trout Stocking Dates, Ohio Department of Natural Resources on September 3, 2026.

“Catchable rainbow trout are stocked to provide immediate fishing opportunities for a short period of time and these fish are expected to remain the size they were when they were stocked.”

Where to look

Where to find Ohio stocked waters

Ohio DNR publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Ohio water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Ohio does it

The Ohio trout programme

Ohio publishes the single most useful sentence about put and take trout anywhere in this vertical, and it is about expectations rather than fish: catchable rainbows are stocked to provide immediate fishing for a short period, and they are expected to stay the size they were when stocked. That is what a ten to fourteen inch hatchery rainbow in an Ohio pond in April is. The October brown trout releases into Clear Creek, the Clear Fork and the Mad River are a different, smaller and colder story.

What goes in, and when. Catchable rainbow trout of 10 to 14 inches, and brown trout of 6 to 9 inches in October. March through May for rainbows, October for brown trout in three streams.

How this record was checked. Trout stocking dates page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "Rainbow Trout Stocking Dates". The size classes, the March to May window, the October brown trout streams and the stocking records database back to 1970 are the division's own.
