Trout Stocking in Wyoming

Over 5 million fish a year into more than 450 waters. WGFD publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where the stocking answer lives. Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

The source that governs

Where Wyoming publishes its stocking record

Wyoming Game and Fish Department publishes stocking records back to 1985 with the date, species, number, average size, water, county and hatchery. It comes out as updated monthly, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

Season

How WGFD sets the Wyoming trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what WGFD does publish.

No season opener

No bar is drawn here because WGFD has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

This state runs no trout season opener; the water is open on the agency's own terms year round.

Wyoming does not run a statewide trout opener; most waters are open all year and the department publishes exceptions in its own regulations.

Where to look

Where to find Wyoming stocked waters

WGFD publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Wyoming water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Wyoming does it

The Wyoming trout programme

Wyoming publishes stocking records back to 1985, which turns the stocking report into something closer to a fishery history than a schedule: you can see what a water has been given for forty years. The department's own account of the annual rhythm is unusually specific, starting in April, holding steady until the heat of mid July, picking up again as the water cools in mid September and stopping in mid November. Kokanee, splake, golden trout, rainbow and Yellowstone cutthroat all move on those trucks.

What goes in, and when. Over 5 million fish a year into more than 450 waters. April to about mid July, then again from mid September to mid November.

How this record was checked. Fish stocking report app fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "WGFD - Fish Stocking Report". The April to mid July and mid September to mid November rhythm, the records back to 1985 and the 450 waters figure were read from wgfd.wyo.gov through a search restricted to that domain.
