Trout Stocking in New Jersey

A statewide programme across the streams and lakes in the division's own trout stocked waters layers. NJ Fish and Wildlife publishes its stocked waters with coordinates, so the box below ranks the 202 of them nearest a ZIP code with the distance on every row. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

The source that governs

Where New Jersey publishes its stocking record

New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife publishes the season's trout allocations by water, the weekly in season stocking schedule and a mapping application of the stocked waters. It comes out as weekly through the in season stockings, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How NJ Fish and Wildlife sets the New Jersey trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what NJ Fish and Wildlife does publish.

Published by the agency

No bar is drawn here because NJ Fish and Wildlife has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

The agency sets its seasons water by water or inside its own regulations, and publishes them there.

The waters

What is in the New Jersey stocked water registry

New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife is one of only 7 agencies in the country that publishes its stocked waters as geodata, which is the only reason a distance ranking for New Jersey is possible here at all. This is the composition of that list.

  • 108 lakes
  • 94 streams

202 waters, counted from New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife’s own published layer and committed to this site on September 3, 2026. A row means the agency lists this water as one it stocks. It is not a statement that fish are in it today.

How New Jersey does it

The New Jersey trout programme

New Jersey is among the most densely fished trout states in the country and the division schedules around that fact: pre season stocking runs for weeks from late March, and in season stockings then go out weekly into the spring. The division publishes its allocations water by water, a level of detail almost nobody else offers, and it publishes the stocked streams and stocked lakes themselves as geodata, which is why New Jersey waters appear in the ZIP tool on this site at all.

What goes in, and when. A statewide programme across the streams and lakes in the division's own trout stocked waters layers. Pre season stocking from late March, in season stockings weekly from mid April to late May.

How this record was checked. Read 2026-09-03. New Jersey's opening day is published on NJDEP's own spring trout pages, which is where the live date lives. The geodata is directly verified: the trout stocked streams and trout stocked lakes layers were read from NJDEP's own ArcGIS service, org NJDEP Bureau of GIS, and 202 stocked waters ship in this site's ZIP tool from it.
