Trout Stocking in Vermont

More than a million fish a year, including two year old trophy trout over 18 inches. Vermont Fish and Wildlife publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where the stocking answer lives. Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

5,227 stocked waters from the 7 agencies that publish theirs with coordinates, plus Montana FWP’s dated stocking events live. Registry built September 3, 2026.

The source that governs

Where Vermont publishes its stocking record

Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department publishes the waters scheduled to be stocked and which stockings have already happened, searchable by waterbody, town, county or species. It comes out as updated almost daily through the stocking season, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How Vermont Fish and Wildlife sets the Vermont trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what Vermont Fish and Wildlife does publish.

Published by the agency

No bar is drawn here because Vermont Fish and Wildlife has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

The agency sets its seasons water by water or inside its own regulations, and publishes them there.

Vermont publishes its trout season dates in its own fishing regulations, by water type.

Where to look

Where to find Vermont stocked waters

Vermont Fish and Wildlife publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Vermont water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Vermont does it

The Vermont trout programme

Vermont's stocking search does the one thing this vertical cares about most: it distinguishes the waters scheduled to be stocked from the stockings that have actually happened, and staff update it almost daily through the season. The Trophy Trout programme is the state's signature, two year old fish over eighteen inches into nine river sections and thirty seven lakes and ponds, stocked from late April through May.

What goes in, and when. More than a million fish a year, including two year old trophy trout over 18 inches. Lakes and ponds from April as the ice clears, rivers through May.

How this record was checked. Fish stocking page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "Fish Stocking | Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department". The scheduled versus completed distinction, the almost daily updates and the Trophy Trout programme detail are the department's own.
