Trout Stocking in South Dakota
Rainbow and brown trout into the Black Hills streams and lakes and into put and take waters east of the river. SD GFP publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Registry built September 3, 2026Where South Dakota publishes its stocking record
South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks publishes the department's stocking record by water and year. It comes out as published as stocking reports, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How SD GFP sets the South Dakota trout season
Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what SD GFP does publish.
No bar is drawn here because SD GFP has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.
This state runs no trout season opener; the water is open on the agency's own terms year round.
South Dakota does not run a statewide trout opener; the department publishes its seasons in its own handbook.

Where to find South Dakota stocked waters
SD GFP publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.
This site could geocode South Dakota water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

The South Dakota trout programme
South Dakota is really two fishing states and the trout live in one of them. The Black Hills hold cold streams and lakes that carry rainbow and brown trout, some of it wild, most of it supported by stocking; east of the Missouri the trout are a put and take fishery in cool weather. Spearfish Creek, Rapid Creek and the Black Hills reservoirs are the waters this programme is really about.
What goes in, and when. Rainbow and brown trout into the Black Hills streams and lakes and into put and take waters east of the river. Through the open water season, with Black Hills waters on their own rhythm.

How this record was checked. Fish stocking reports page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03; the site returned the GFP stocking reports page. No dated opener is republished because the department publishes seasons in its fishing handbook.
