Trout Stocking in Maryland

About 240,000 adult rainbow, golden rainbow and brown trout into more than 100 waterbodies in 19 counties. Maryland DNR publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where the stocking answer lives. Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

Where Maryland publishes its stocking record

Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services publishes a table of stocked locations, updated as the trucks go out, plus a monthly schedule document for the spring run. It comes out as updated daily on the website once spring stocking begins, weekly on the recorded phone line, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How Maryland DNR sets the Maryland trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what Maryland DNR does publish.

A recurring rule, not a date

No bar is drawn here because Maryland DNR has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

  • Opening day of the put and take trout season6:30 a.m. on the last Saturday in March
  • Youth trout fishing daythe Saturday before opening day, for anglers under 16, at put and take waters with a number 1 closure

The agency publishes a recurring rule rather than a calendar date, and the rule is reproduced in its own words.

Maryland states its opener as a recurring rule rather than as a calendar date.

Where to look

Where to find Maryland stocked waters

Maryland DNR publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Maryland water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

About 240,000 adult rainbow, golden rainbow and brown trout into more than 100 waterbodies in 19 counties. The window Maryland DNR describes is: february in the milder eastern, southern and central counties, March into May in Allegany and Garrett, and a fall round in October.

How Maryland does it

The Maryland trout programme

Maryland stocks in the order its weather thaws, which is the most geographically legible stocking programme on the east coast: the eastern, southern and central counties start in February, and the western mountains of Allegany and Garrett wait for March and run into May. Fall stocking comes back in October. The state has three colours of trout in the programme, including golden rainbows, which exist because they are easy to see and easy to catch.

What goes in, and when. About 240,000 adult rainbow, golden rainbow and brown trout into more than 100 waterbodies in 19 counties. February in the milder eastern, southern and central counties, March into May in Allegany and Garrett, and a fall round in October.

How this record was checked. Trout stocking status page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "Trout Stocking". The last Saturday in March rule, the county by county timing and the 240,000 fish figure are DNR's own. No calendar date is derived from the rule.
