Trout Stocking in Missouri

Nearly 40,000 rainbow trout into St. Louis area lakes alone in a winter. MDC publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where the stocking answer lives. Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

5,227 stocked waters from the 7 agencies that publish theirs with coordinates, plus Montana FWP’s dated stocking events live. Registry built September 3, 2026.

Where Missouri publishes its stocking record

Missouri Department of Conservation publishes the lakes stocked for the winter trout fishery and the trout parks that run the rest of the year. It comes out as announced by area, with recorded stocking hotlines for Kansas City and St. Louis, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How MDC sets the Missouri trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what MDC does publish.

Published by the agency

No bar is drawn here because MDC has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

The agency sets its seasons water by water or inside its own regulations, and publishes them there.

Missouri runs a trout park season and a separate winter urban programme with their own dates, which the department publishes area by area.

Where to look

Where to find Missouri stocked waters

MDC publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Missouri water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Missouri does it

The Missouri trout programme

Missouri has two trout traditions that share nothing but the fish. The trout parks, Bennett Spring, Montauk, Roaring River and Maramec, are spring fed and have run as put and take fisheries for a century. The winter urban programme is the newer idea: rainbow trout into city lakes from November, in water that is only cold enough for a few months, at Fountain Bluff, Cleveland Lake, Jesse James Park Lake and dozens more around Kansas City and St. Louis.

What goes in, and when. Nearly 40,000 rainbow trout into St. Louis area lakes alone in a winter. November into February and March in the urban lakes; the trout parks run on their own season.

How this record was checked. Winter trout areas page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "Winter Trout Fishing Areas | Missouri Department of Conservation". The November start, the roughly 40,000 St. Louis figure and the named lakes are the department's own.
