Trout Stocking in New Hampshire

Close to a million catchable size trout a year. NH Fish and Game publishes its stocked waters with coordinates, so the box below ranks the 478 of them nearest a ZIP code with the distance on every row. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

Where New Hampshire publishes its stocking record

New Hampshire Fish and Game Department publishes an interactive map of which waterbodies have been stocked, the same data as a downloadable table, and a dated PDF report. It comes out as updated through the stocking season, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How NH Fish and Game sets the New Hampshire trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what NH Fish and Game does publish.

Published by the agency

No bar is drawn here because NH Fish and Game has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

The agency sets its seasons water by water or inside its own regulations, and publishes them there.

New Hampshire sets separate seasons for designated trout ponds, lakes and streams, which the department publishes in its own rules.

The waters

What is in the New Hampshire stocked water registry

New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is one of only 7 agencies in the country that publishes its stocked waters as geodata, which is the only reason a distance ranking for New Hampshire is possible here at all. This is the composition of that list.

  • 234 streams
  • 211 lakes
  • 33 ponds

478 waters, counted from New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s own published layer and committed to this site on September 3, 2026. A row means the agency lists this water as one it stocks. It is not a statement that fish are in it today.

How New Hampshire does it

The New Hampshire trout programme

New Hampshire is one of the few states that put its stocking data in three forms at once: a map, a table you can download as a spreadsheet, and a dated PDF. The department says the stocking decisions themselves turn on how popular and how accessible a site is, how workable the logistics are, and what the water can actually support, which is a more honest list of criteria than most agencies publish.

What goes in, and when. Close to a million catchable size trout a year. Ice out through the summer, with hatchery output adjusted during modernisation work.

How this record was checked. wildlife.nh.gov returned 403 Access Denied to automated readers on 2026-09-03, so the stocking report page could not be fetched directly; its content and the interactive map plus spreadsheet were read from NH Fish and Game's own pages through a search restricted to wildlife.nh.gov and nhfishgame.com, and the stocked lakes and streams geodata was read directly from the department's own ArcGIS service (org: NH Fish and Game Department) the same day.
