Trout Stocking in Tennessee

More than 70,000 trout in a recent winter stocking programme across more than 40 locations. TWRA publishes its stocked waters with coordinates, so the box below ranks the 618 of them nearest a ZIP code with the distance on every row. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where the stocking answer lives. Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

5,227 stocked waters from the 7 agencies that publish theirs with coordinates, plus Montana FWP’s dated stocking events live. Registry built September 3, 2026.

Where Tennessee publishes its stocking record

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency publishes where adult brook, brown or rainbow trout were recently stocked, in searchable tables. It comes out as updated bi-weekly through the stocking season, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How TWRA sets the Tennessee trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what TWRA does publish.

No season opener

No bar is drawn here because TWRA has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

This state runs no trout season opener; the water is open on the agency's own terms year round.

Tennessee does not run a statewide trout opener; the agency publishes water specific seasons in its own regulations.

Read from Trout Fishing and Stockings, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency on September 3, 2026.

“The stocking report is updated bi-weekly through the stocking season.”

What is in the Tennessee stocked water registry

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is one of only 7 agencies in the country that publishes its stocked waters as geodata, which is the only reason a distance ranking for Tennessee is possible here at all. This is the composition of that list.

  • 549 streams
  • 40 ponds
  • 26 reservoirs
  • 3 waters (kind not labelled)

618 waters, counted from Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s own published layer and committed to this site on September 3, 2026. A row means the agency lists this water as one it stocks. It is not a statement that fish are in it today.

How Tennessee does it

The Tennessee trout programme

Tennessee holds trout in two places that could not be less alike: the wild mountain streams of the Cherokee and the Smokies in the east, and the cold tailwaters below the big TVA and Corps dams, where a river that would be far too warm in summer runs at hatchery temperature because the water comes off the bottom of a reservoir. The winter programme adds a third: community waters stocked from late November so that a city has trout for a few months.

What goes in, and when. More than 70,000 trout in a recent winter stocking programme across more than 40 locations. March through December in most reservoirs and streams, plus a winter programme from late November.

How this record was checked. Trout fishing and stockings page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "Trout Fishing & Stockings". The bi-weekly cadence is TWRA's own quoted sentence. The stocking locations geodata was read directly from TWRA's own ArcGIS service (org: Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency) the same day.
