Trout Stocking in Illinois

More than 80,000 rainbow trout for the spring season and about 80,000 again for the fall. IDNR publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

The most recent Illinois trout opener IDNR published was April 4, 2026

Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

5,227 stocked waters from the 7 agencies that publish theirs with coordinates, plus Montana FWP’s dated stocking events live. Registry built September 3, 2026.

The source that governs

Where Illinois publishes its stocking record

Illinois Department of Natural Resources publishes the sites stocked for each catchable trout season and the dates the department opens them. It comes out as two announcements a year, one per season, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

Season

The Illinois trout season dates IDNR published

These are IDNR's own dates for the season they name, with the year attached and the page they were read from underneath.

Dates publishedSeason year 2026

The agency has posted dated openers and they are reproduced here with the source.

The department says the fall season begins in October but had not published a fall 2026 date when this page was last checked.

That date has passed. It is what IDNR last published, and it is not a date for the coming season. IDNR posts the next season when it sets it.

Where to look

Where to find Illinois stocked waters

IDNR publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Illinois water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

More than 80,000 rainbow trout for the spring season and about 80,000 again for the fall. The window IDNR describes is: immediately before each of the two catchable trout seasons.

How Illinois does it

The Illinois trout programme

Illinois runs the purest form of a put and take trout programme in the Midwest: two short seasons, roughly eighty thousand rainbow trout each, released into a fixed list of ponds, lakes and stream reaches days before the season opens, in a state with essentially no water that will hold a trout through August. The department announces the site list and the date together, and it revises the list every year, moving stockings between waters as ponds are rehabilitated. Its 2026 release names four such changes by county.

What goes in, and when. More than 80,000 rainbow trout for the spring season and about 80,000 again for the fall. Immediately before each of the two catchable trout seasons.

How this record was checked. IDNR news release PDF fetched and read in full in session on 2026-09-03; it is dated Thursday, March 19, 2026 and carries the department's own media contact. The April 4 date, the 58 sites, the 80,000 fish per season and the October fall season were all read from that document. dnr.illinois.gov/fishing redirects to the department's iFish Illinois site, which is where the site lists live.
