Trout Stocking in Maine

More than a million trout and salmon a year into more than 800 waters. Maine IFW publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where the stocking answer lives. Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

5,227 stocked waters from the 7 agencies that publish theirs with coordinates, plus Montana FWP’s dated stocking events live. Registry built September 3, 2026.

Where Maine publishes its stocking record

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife publishes waters grouped by county and listed by town with the stocking date, species, number and size. It comes out as updated by hatchery staff within a few days of release, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How Maine IFW sets the Maine trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what Maine IFW does publish.

Published by the agency

No bar is drawn here because Maine IFW has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

The agency sets its seasons water by water or inside its own regulations, and publishes them there.

Maine sets open water seasons by water and by region in its own law book, which is where an opener has to be read.

Where to look

Where to find Maine stocked waters

Maine IFW publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Maine water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Maine does it

The Maine trout programme

Maine's stocking report is one of the best in the country at the thing that matters here: hatchery staff update it within a few days of the fish going in, so the date beside a water is close to the date the truck was there. Behind it is the largest wild brook trout resource in the eastern United States, which is a different fishery entirely and one the department is careful to distinguish from its stocked waters.

What goes in, and when. More than a million trout and salmon a year into more than 800 waters. Spring and fall, with the report published continuously.

How this record was checked. Stocking report page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "Fish Stocking Report: Fishing: Fishing & Boating: Maine Dept of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife". The county and town grouping, the few days lag and the 800 waters figure are MDIFW's own.
