Trout Stocking in Pennsylvania

About 3.2 million adult trout into 684 streams and 130 lakes, plus about 1.1 million fingerlings from cooperative nurseries. PFBC publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where Pennsylvania publishes its stocking record

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission publishes the full adult trout stocking schedule, searchable by county, with the waterways in alphabetical order and the species planned for each. It comes out as the season schedule is published in full in late January, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How PFBC sets the Pennsylvania trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what PFBC does publish.

Not yet published

No bar is drawn here because PFBC has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

The agency had not posted the coming season when this page was last checked.

The commission had not published a 2027 statewide opening day when this page was last checked. Pennsylvania's 2026 opening day has passed.

Where to look

Where to find Pennsylvania stocked waters

PFBC publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Pennsylvania water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Pennsylvania does it

The Pennsylvania trout programme

Pennsylvania stocks more adult trout than any other state in this vertical and publishes the schedule earlier: the full county by county list goes up in late January, before the trucks roll in February, which makes it a genuine planning document rather than a record. About 3.2 million adult fish go into 684 streams and 130 lakes, with roughly another 1.1 million fingerlings from the cooperative nursery network on top.

How this record was checked. Trout stocking page fetched and confirmed on 2026-09-03, title "Trout Stocking | Fish and Boat Commission | Commonwealth of Pennsylvania". The page states the stocking numbers and links the fbweb.pa.gov schedule tool, and states no opening day, so none is republished. PFBC's ArcGIS host at fbweb.pa.gov would not complete a TLS handshake from here across repeated attempts, so no PA waters carry coordinates on this site.
