Trout Stocking in Virginia

More than 1.2 million catchable trout into more than 180 stream sections and lakes. Virginia DWR publishes its stocked waters as names rather than coordinates, so the agency’s own stocking report is where to look them up. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where Virginia publishes its stocking record

Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources publishes the day's stockings, posted as they happen from October through May. It comes out as daily through the stocking season, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

How Virginia DWR sets the Virginia trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what Virginia DWR does publish.

No season opener

No bar is drawn here because Virginia DWR has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

This state runs no trout season opener; the water is open on the agency's own terms year round.

Virginia's designated stocked trout waters are open through the stocking season; the department publishes its water specific rules in its own regulations.

Where to look

Where to find Virginia stocked waters

Virginia DWR publishes which waters it stocks. What it does not publish is those waters as coordinates, and a stocking list that reads “Spring Creek, Centre County” is perfectly good for a person with a map and completely useless for a distance ranking. Only 7 agencies publish geodata: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah.

This site could geocode Virginia water names into coordinates and put pins on a map. It does not, because that process quietly invents precision: two creeks share a name, a river reach becomes a point, and the reader gets a map that looks authoritative and is wrong in ways nobody can see. The agency's own list is better than anything that could be rebuilt from it here.

How Virginia does it

The Virginia trout programme

Virginia sorts its stocked waters into categories by how often they get fish, and publishes the categories, which is the most useful thing a state can tell an angler who wants to know their odds. Category A waters get eight stockings between the start of October and the end of May, Category B five between October and mid May, and Category C three between October and the end of April. The department posts the day's stockings as they happen, and notes that most stocking happens between ten in the morning and two in the afternoon.

How this record was checked. Daily trout stocking schedule page confirmed to resolve on 2026-09-03, title "Daily Trout Stocking Schedule | Virginia DWR". The category frequencies, the October to June window and the 1.2 million figure were read from DWR's own pages through a search restricted to dwr.virginia.gov. The ArcGIS layers named "DGIF Stocked Trout" are hosted by the University of Virginia library rather than by DWR, so DWR's own daily schedule is the source cited here.
